ah, I didnt notice that. Cant edit anyway. 小黑 should say (black dogs only) of course. I like the Chinese version of "Spot". Dian Dian. Just doesn't have the same ring in Chinese though. Im guessing a lot of dogs in China are just called Xiao Gou. My son just got a Chinese Shar-Pei + Beagle mix. Great temperament that dog. I now officially have a "Grand-dog". I just had to put my cat ("Tiger") of 19 years down not long ago. You get pretty attached to them as Im sure you know since your buddy made it into your avatar. Kind of looks like Tiger. Feel free to add to the list, Cat names too. I really miss that cat. Tough guy that I am. :-)

I believe it comes from Japanese Anime and is a visual euphemism for a rush of blood to, well you figure it out.

It is a spoken language only. From what I remember, hanzi is sometimes used phonetically to represent Shanghainese words but it does not have its own written language. Apparently there have been recent attempts to create some sort of link with pinyin according to the article listed below.

there may be some truth to that.

Crawfish is preferred in the U.S., while crayfish is preferred in most other English-speaking areas. Crawdad is prevalent in parts of the U.S., and cray is frequently used in Australia and New Zealand.

I live in the US but as kids we always called them crayfish, so Im with you on this one.

I always buy sim cards before I leave from:

http://www.telestial.com/sim_cards.php

As you add top off minutes while in China your sim card expiration is extended by 180 days for every 100 RMB you add I think it is, up to a max of 2 years. As long as you return to China before it expires it will continue to work and your minutes are preserved. They also sell GSM unlocked phones. Its nice to have a phone that works as soon as the plane touches the ground. Text messaging the US is very cheap and a great way to stay in touch.  I also have a backup phone as maffani has recommended. Dont let your minutes run out completely or you will have to use another phone to add  minutes to yours. I only let this happen once. Most chargers automatically adapt to either 110 or 220v but read the fine print on the device to be sure. If not, most high end hotels have a 110v outlet in the bathroom for razors you can use.  Always pack a couple of outlet adapters.
