Would it be better to say

你确定吗？

This seems like the more natural way to express this, (of course, I am a non-native speaker, so I guess my opinion of 'natural' is probably not very valuable). Any thoughts on this?

This is interesting, I don't think I have ever heard this information in my entire life.

About this 'Buddhist vegetable' on a menu insight, it makes me somewhat curious. Certianly, they are not going to write this in English (unless you are in a place such as Dali or Pingyao or some other tourist area), so would the characters be 佛教蔬菜？

I remember when "The Radical Show" came out. When it was released, I immediately hated it. Today, I don't think I would have hated it as much. Back then, I had just started to learn characters, and I didn't think there was much value in learning to write characters, or trying to understand why they meant what they did.

Today, I think I would appreciate a show like "The Radical Show". I don't know if I would like the same humor or exact approach used, but the idea of explaining some of the structure of the characters is IMO very important and interesting.

Well, hell.. I guess Ill put my two cents in as well. I read the discussion, and I was expecting (and actually kind of looking forward to... ha ha) some really inappropriate use of the word 'piss'. Perhaps it is because I am a little bit twisted, but I always love to hear second language speakers use inappropriate language in English... ha ha.. Anyhow, I listened to this podcast, and I don't see the big deal. If no one had said anything about her usage of the word 'pissed' I would never have thought twice about it. It was used in what I feel was an appropriate way, and conveyed the situation in a way that I don't think could have better done by a native speaker. I guess my point is is that, in my opinion, I don't think there is a problem here.

I thought that maybe she was going to go on a tirade about the word 'pissed', or maybe use it in a way that is truly inappropriate, but I didn't feel this at all.

Is the word pissed inappropriate? it is. I can't argue that. Was DiLu being inappropriate here? In my opinion, no. Absolutely not.

Everyone is, of course entitled to their opinion, and some people earlier in this thread have wrote things contrary to what I wrote in this thread. Of course that is the way it is, and the way it should be. They said their piece, I am saying mine now.

While I have listened to several of Dilu's lessons, I have not met her, but I have met Jenny when I visited the office. I can tell you that she is real, and her charisma and charm is sincere. She is a natural teacher, one of the best I have ever met, and I believe teaching runs through her vains alongside her blood. Jenny is also a respectful young woman, and so if she says Dilu is as well, I am not going to argue with her =)

My verdict is that this lesson is fine in the form it is in right now, I don't think anything is inappropriate, and wouldn't have thought anything abnormal about it, so I acquit Dilu of all charges! =)

I hope that as people are reading it, they can understand my tone is lighthearted. I am trying to have a little fun with this, but also perhaps offer a different take on the issue as well.

OK, I have said my piece, time for me to move onto more fruitful studying and tasks.

Actually, I kind of like this idea... Perhaps, if there is ever a day where the staff at Chinesepod are bored (lol), they could do a number of series covering local language in different parts of China, kind of how a series was made for Shanghainese.. Ha ha, I know that this type of thing probably wouldn't be too important for most people, but it may be interesting. I don't know, just figured I would just throw the thought out there. Also, I hope to someday get to listen to the Cantonese series... but I don't think any of these are terribly important.

I remember one time I stayed at a hostel and I was in a four bed dorm. There was one guy, an older foreigner, who operated a gallery in that town. He was living in the dorm. In the bunk below me, there was a Chinese dude from Beijing who was on an extended stay. He was a purchaser for his company, so he was in town to purchase inventory to sell in Beijing. The bunk under the foreigner was sometimes used by the staff, but one night there was a guest using that bed, then there was me. I felt a bit off after the first night because I almost felt like I was intruding on someone's home.

Oddly enough, the 保安 is usually pretty good, at least with me. Depending on the hostel, sometimes the workers are not approachable. Some places are great, as I mentioned earlier, but some places are terrible.

Oh, thats another thing... staff.... I have found every level of quality from really awesome attentive staff, to complete douches... Its a crap shoot what you get, unless you are fortunate enough to get a 'word of mouth' tip.
