Tragedy is a part of life, part more importantly, tragedy is an important cultural element in Chinese stories! This is something we apparently cannot avoid in our storylines... :)

frenchfrench, It's a pretty Chinese thing to do to ask a question by presenting the two possibilities. Just like you ask if it's good/OK or not by asking 好不好 (hǎo bù hǎo), you ask if something is "real or fake" (true or not) with 真的假的 (zhēn de jiǎ de). So yes, it is another way of asking, "really??" Strangely, you don't really hear 真不真 (zhēn bu zhēn). I think this is because you don't say 真 (zhēn) very much, you say 真的 (zhēn de).

paulc, Chicago is not really a windy city?! Come on, that's the one thing that was drawing me to the city! OK, maybe not... :) It seems Jeff007s finds it pretty windy, though. Jeff007s, 你是哪里人?

This is a weird dialogue for a weird lesson. Lessons like this are something of an anomaly in our practicality-oriented Newbie library. Savor the bizzarre!

Jiajie, What about 一听可乐 (yī tīng kělè)? That's the one I hear the most for "can" here in Shanghai...

Yeah, my statement was perhaps a slight exaggeration... I could do yoga, but I don't, and I remain quite inflexible as a result. :(

瑜伽对我来说完全不可能! :(

jane, Thank you for letting us know. There is an "old lesson update" in the works, and this lesson will get the treatment.

Ha ha, gotta love the crickets. One interesting behind-the-scenes cultural note is that we had to spend quite a bit of time explaining to the Chinese audio technicians what the whole cricket thing was about. Very culture-dependent. :)
