January 13, 2009 at 3:49 AMI got married in China, so I did the whole 喜糖 (xǐtáng) thing. I remember finding it a little tricky to figure out exactly who I needed to give it to. Co-workers? Classmates (I was a graduate student at the time)? Friends? Neighbors?

I see your point, but the way we write the tones follows the rules for pinyin, which we did not create. Once you learn the three basic rules, it's quite a regular system.
You can find those rules in the Tones section of our Pronunciation Guide (scroll to the bottom).

January 7, 2009 at 6:07 AMWell said, Pete. And we do have plenty of very practical lessons.
The truth is, once you get to a rather advanced level, you naturally begin learning more and more words and phrases that are perhaps not "ultra-practical." Every lesson has a balance of higher and lower frequency words, and the balance differs somewhat from lesson to lesson... (like the ever-shifting sands of a desert? hehe)
Don't worry, though... we will always have practical lessons!

We cover all these pronunciation issues at length in our Pronunciation Guide. You can download a chart which contains all possible syllables, and you can read specifically about yuan. If all the explanation is too much, scroll down to the audio.

Ha ha... Hilarious take on 三长两短!
It turns out the one 短est (?) in height turned out to be the one 长est in talent/starpower...

January 14, 2009 at 9:27 AMThe Admin is active on the UserVoice account. For some reason the changes aren't always immediately visible. You can see what's been accepted, what's in progress, etc. I'm looking forward to crossing off the first couple items (like improved search) as completed!
