The Shanghai World Expo definitely feels as important to Shanghai as the Olympics felt to Beijing, although I, too, am not as immediately clear on why.
One person explained it to me this way: "the Olympics was China's opportunity to put on a show for the world. The World Expo is the world's chance to come put on a show for China."
In any case, there's lots of economic stimulus going on!
