John: So Dilu, I think this word 骨折,it deserves a little bit more attention because its kind of hard to use when you're using it for the first time.
Dilu: 对。骨折这个词在中文和在英文里面的用法不太一样。
John: Right. So let me ask a quick question. This 骨折, that 折, is that the same as 打折?
Dilu: 是一个字,但是意思好象不一样吧。
John: Same character, different meaning, just checking. So 骨折 - the pattern here is:骨 means 'bone', so its a noun, and 折 means 'break', its a verb. And its weird to have this noun-verb pattern.

Dilu: 这个医生很 efficient。下一个病人。
John: I think that's how a lot of the hospitals are here. Let's listen to the dialog one more time.

Dilu: 对。你先去付钱,付钱以后,去石膏室打石膏。
John: 石膏室。This is a room just for casts.
Dilu: 对。有一个打石膏的房间叫:石膏室。

John: So 'foot bone broke'.
Dilu: 对啊。就是这个意思。
John: Notice in English we like to omit the word 'bone'. In Chinese you can't do that. You have to always say 'bone broke', in that order.
Dilu: 骨折。对。骨折。
John: So if you break a bone then ...
Dilu: 要打石膏。打石膏。
John: The word 'cast', the noun, is ...
Dilu: 石膏。第二声和第一声。石膏。
John: And that means 'stone paste'.石膏。

Dilu: 可以是 pinch,也可以是拿一个手,这个手去捏,to squeeze.
John: Squeeze with your whole hand.
Dilu: 对。
John: Anyway, he's applying pressure. So 捏 can be as small as a pinch, or as big as a squeeze (of) someone's whole foot with your hand.
Dilu: 对。捏。第一声。
John: When he does that, it hurts.
Dilu: 好象很痛的样子。她说:啊,痛,痛,痛。

John: Now what he's asking is 'when did you fall?'. 'When did you hurt yourself?'
Dilu: 是在问时间。这里有一个 是...的 pattern。
John: We see the 的 at the end of the sentence, but the 是 is omitted. If the 是 was in there and we had a very full sentence, what would it be?
Dilu: 你是什么时候摔的?你是什么时候摔的?
John: So he's asking a specific question about the past. 'When did you trip and fall?' That's why we use the 是...的 - trying to get at that specific information.
