John: Do you have friends who have done that?
John: OK.
Dilu:
John: She let's me pay the rent, so maybe that's not 合租。 So if you give your parents rent money, does that count as 合租?
Dilu:
John: OK, so nice.
Dilu:
John: You've got it good.
Dilu: I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Of course that's not true.
John: OK, we're done with the lesson for today. If you have any questions, please come to ChinesePod.com and ask us.
Dilu:
John: 再见。

John: I think there are both types in the States. Some people aren't comfortable living with someone of the opposite sex they don't really know. Some people don't care. So in China what's the situation?

John: 我的室友 ... actually they were two friends of mine. I can't really say they're too 变态。
Dilu:
John: 对。
Dilu:
John: That's pretty common too.
Dilu:
John: Yeah, its pretty common.

John:
Dilu:
John:
Dilu:

John: Notice how she said 'if you live far away'.
Dilu:
John: So this 的话 is the 'if'.
Dilu: 是的。
John:
Dilu:
John: So all of your time is wasted on the road. The word for 'waste' is ...
Dilu:
John: Two 4th tones. So there are all some very real issues that you face when you're renting an apartment in 上海。Foreigners face these same issues. Let's listen to this one more time, and then we'll talk about some other things.
Dilu: 好的。

John: 'So you want to consider living a bit far away?'
Dilu:
We have the 得 there.
Dilu:
John: In other words, not in the city centre.
Dilu:
John: Could we also say
Dilu:
John: So 'a little closer'.
Dilu:

John: So its probably a little old, its not especially nice. It doesn't actually mean that there are holes in the wall.
Dilu:
John: Its totally run down, its just not super nice.
Dilu:
John: But there's another way you can save 'money', which is ... location, location, location.

John: This is a useful phrase when you're saying 'yeah, that's true'. Its something you didn't think about, or its a point of view you hadn't fully considered.
Dilu:
John: 'Yeah, that's true'. So its three 4th tones.
John: 'A small beat-up room' needs 1000 块 a month。

Dilu: 没错。
John: 都不够,what is this 都 doing?
John: So its not 'even' enough for paying the rent.
John: So there's no 连 here, but that's what it means, that's what the 都 is doing.
Dilu: 对。
John: Got it.
Dilu:
John: So her friend has to admit that this is true. What does she say?
Dilu:

John: Could you say
Dilu:
John: So 只有 or 才 三千。
Dilu:

Dilu:

Dilu:
John: Here's this verb 租 again. And then we have a complement 不起。
Dilu: 是的。
John: This should bring to mind
Dilu:
John: So 买不起 means 'can't afford to buy'.
Dilu: 对。那'租不起'就是 can't afford to rent。
John: Got it. So she can't afford it because ...
Dilu:

John: [Such a]dirty roommate could be a 变态室友。
John: Like a cat-lady roommate, that would be bad. So this 变态,it doesn't necessarily mean totally perverted, sexually perverse, it could just be ...
Dilu:
John: ... weird.
Dilu:
John: OK.

John: 碰上。This is like 'run into'. Is this like 碰到?
Dilu:
John: OK. So its like you 'just run into', you 'happen to get' ... what kind of roommate?
Dilu:
John: 变态,two 4th tones, this online is abbreviated to BT sometimes.

John: What if you break it, then what? You can't break my cellphone.
Dilu: 或者是:We're going to give him a surprise party.
John: OK. So 'what if?'. Do you have to have the 怎么办 at the end?
Dilu:
John: So its often there at the end. In this case, what if what?

John: Can you just say 合租 instead of 跟人合租?
Dilu:
John: OK. but the friend asking the question thinks that 合租 is a little risky.
Dilu:
John: First of all we have this 万一 question. And you'll notice that when you start with 万一 you often end with 怎么办。
Dilu: 对。
