John: So 说明书 is a kind of book. In this case its an 'instruction book', an 'instruction manual'.

Dilu: 对。我看看说明书。

John: What are the tones on that word?

Dilu: 说明是第一声和第二声。书是第一声。说明书。

John: Then at the end the customer service rep says ...

Dilu: 没有这个型号。

John: Meaning that that number doesn't even exist. That's the end, so let's listen one more time, then we have a few other things to say.

John: In this case its the 'model number'.

John: 上门 means they come to your door.

Dilu: 对。到你家去,或者是到你的公司去维修。

John: But during the day is not good for this guy.

Dilu: 对。白天不行,我要上班的。

John: 我要上班的。Why is there a 的 here?

Dilu: 就是强调我要上班。

John: So its this tone of voice. Its like 'I definitely have to go to work'. So don't really try to negotiate this with me.

John: Normally when you arrange to have someone sent to your house, the verb is ...

Dilu: 安排。安排。

John: And the 师傅 refers to the repair guy.

Dilu: 对。

John: And if he goes yo your home or to your office location, they go to you, you're typically going to see this other word.

John: In this case, the word for 'buy' is not just 买, its ...

Dilu: 购买。购买。

John: 4th tone, 3rd tone. Why are we saying 购买 instead of just 买?

Dilu: Again, 这是一个比较 formal 的词。

John: 正式一点。

Dilu: 对。他的回答是:大概是09年的时候买的。大概是09年的时候买的。

John: Notice: 是...的 question - 是...的 answer. So then they start getting down to business about sending someone to the guy's house.

John: So 过期 refers to 'expire', 'to pass the period'. And then we have a question that uses the 是...的 pattern.

Dilu: 您是什么时候购买的?您是什么时候购买的?

John: Frequently 是...的 is used in a question to emphasize that you want to know a specific detail about something that happened in the past. In this case its 'when did you buy it?'.

John: But the answer is ...

Dilu: 应该超过了。应该超过了。

John: 超过了。'To exceed'.

Dilu: 就是超过保修期了。

John: 'To pass'. Could you also say 应该过了?

Dilu: 也可以的。我们有的时候又会听到'过期'。就是过了这个保修期,或者是过了这个时间。

John: So that's 修 meaning 'to fix'.

John: and then 保 is like 'protect'. So this is the 'warranty period'.

John: So the question is 'is it within the warranty period?'.

John: 出现 - 1st tone, 4th tone - this means 'to emerge', 'to appear'. So 'what problem has appeared in your life?'.

John: So its kind of formal. To be less formal you could say: 有什么问题?

Dilu: 没错。如果你的东西坏了,然后你是去一个 street vendor [???] 说,那他就会问你:你有什么问题?

John: So 派, 4th tone, that means to 'send' someone'.

Dilu: 对。

John: It typically is send them on a mission to do something.

Dilu: 没错。派人来修。派人来修这个洗衣机。

John: 修, 1st tone again, that's 'fix'. You'll notice that the customer service rep used 维修, and then the actual person making the call uses 修 - they're being less formal.

Dilu: 是的。

John: Two 3rd tones. This is a famous Chinese company, and they make all kinds of home appliances.

Dilu: 对。而且这个是维修热线。维修热线。

John: That's the repair hotline.

Dilu: 没错。

John: In Chinese, 'hotline' is literally 'hot line'.

Dilu: 没错。那你们也有 hotline, 什么是 hot line。

John: Well its not always so direct, but in this case 热线 is very direct. Two 4th tones.

John: 维修 - 2nd tone, 1st tone - this refers to some kind of repair.

Dilu: 是的。And most of the time you'll hear 修 instead of 维修,因为维修听上去比较正式。

John: So 维修 is a somewhat more formal form of just 修 which means to fix something.
