Dilu: 大家好，欢迎收听中文播客，中级课程，我是 Dilu。
John: Hi guys, I'm John, this is an Intermediate lesson on ChinesePod.
John: 维修 - 2nd tone, 1st tone - this refers to some kind of repair.
Dilu: 是的。And most of the time you'll hear 修 instead of 维修，因为维修听上去比较正式。
John: So 维修 is a somewhat more formal form of just 修 which means to fix something.
John: So that's whats happening in this dialog. Someone has some home appliance that broke, and they're making a call, so let's listen to what happens.
0:47 - dialog
John: So right in the beginning we hear this customer service representative, and they give us this little earful of formal talk. What do they say?
John: So first of all, 致电, what is that?
John: So its formal, it means to call like a company.
John: In this case, 'welcome to call'. Its like 'we're glad you called us'.
Dilu: 对。欢迎致电 ChinesePod。
John: OK, got it. And the company in this case is ...
John: Two 3rd tones. This is a famous Chinese company, and they make all kinds of home appliances.
John: That's the repair hotline.
John: In Chinese, 'hotline' is literally 'hot line'.
Dilu: 没错。那你们也有 hotline, 什么是 hot line。
John: Well its not always so direct, but in this case 热线 is very direct. Two 4th tones.
John: So 'what can we help you with'. And in this case the problem is ...
John: So 'wash-clothes machine' is a 'washing machine'.
John: And the question is ...
John: So do what to somebody?
John: So 派, 4th tone, that means to 'send' someone'.
John: It typically is send them on a mission to do something.
John: 修, 1st tone again, that's 'fix'. You'll notice that the customer service rep used 维修, and then the actual person making the call uses 修 - they're being less formal.
John: Then we have another question from the customer service rep.
John: 出现 - 1st tone, 4th tone - this means 'to emerge', 'to appear'. So 'what problem has appeared in your life?'.
John: So its kind of formal. To be less formal you could say: 有什么问题？
Dilu: 没错。如果你的东西坏了，然后你是去一个 street vendor [???] 说，那他就会问你：你有什么问题？
John: OK,informal. So what is the problem?
John: So the washing machine is making all kinds of strange noises.
John: So when you say 'make a noise', you use the verb ...
John: Some kind of noise. And the next question for the guy is?
