John: And they feel like not 贴膜ing is a big risk, and they're not going to take that risk.
Dilu: 对啊。手机划伤了,怎么办?很贵的。
John: Anyway, that's the Chinese psychology of it. You will see these 贴膜 people all over the place in China.
Dilu: 对。如果你有什么想法或者是问题,欢迎你到 ChinesePod,给我们留言。
John: All right, see you.
Dilu: 再见。

John: 那你呢?你贴膜吗?
Dilu: 我当然贴啦,因为我是中国人。你知道中国人买手机的时候,都会贴膜。
John: I tell my Chinese friends 'you guys should research gorilla glass???' Its really pretty amazing how scratch-resistant it is.
Dilu: 我觉得其实中国人是因为以前用过一些不好的手机,然后他的那个屏幕都会划伤,所以就有这个 habits,[会去]贴膜。

The problem with that is that there is definitely another syllable before each 'you', and it sounds like 'yi'. I'm wondering if its actually: 已有
The fact that John said 'this might be getting complicated for our listeners', and basically stops Dilu from continuing with this, suggests to me that it might be more complicated that the 又...又... pattern - something I haven't seen before.

Dilu: 你是说给你的 iPhone 5 买保护套,还是说给你的 iPad 买保护套?
John: iPhone 5.
Dilu: 那你[以为]要贴膜[??]买保护套。[???]
John: [???] English. This might be getting complicated for our listeners. So I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad 2. I do have the 膜 on my iPhone 5.
Dilu: 因为你很担心你的 iPhone。
John: Partly because I listened to the sales person and they freaked out when I didn't want to put it on. But also because I want to get a case but I don't have one yet, and I feel like it just protects it a little bit until I get a case.

Dilu: John,你有没有什么 iPhone 啊,iPad [的种??]?
John: 我没有 iPad 迷你,但是我有 iPhone 5 和 iPad 2。
Dilu: Fancy. 那你有没有贴膜?
John: iPad 没有。但是 iPhone 5 有。
Dilu: 为什么呢?你不怕你的 iPad 被划伤了?
John: 我觉得 iPhone 应该不需要贴膜,但是 ...
Dilu: 但是你贴啦。
John: 我贴了。但是我觉得需要这个保护套。但是我还没有买保护套。

Dilu: 对。
John: It means 'fall to the ground'.
Dilu: 没错。掉在地上。但是感觉东西会很重。
John: So something that's fairly heavy.
Dilu: 对。你可以说:一个人摔下去。但是你不可以说:一个 feather 摔下去。
John: OK. So 'if you drop the iPad Mini ...
Dilu: 就完了。就完了。
John: 完了 - so 'its over'.
Dilu: Its over - game over.
John: Meaning its going to totally break?
Dilu: 就会很糟糕,可能会摔坏。

April 13, 2013 at 01:01 AM
Dilu: 对。都可以说'薄'。或者是'厚'。
John: So I emphasise what types of things can use bao 薄 or 厚, because in English 'thick' and 'thin' can apply to lots of different situtations - people, rope - in Chinese its different.薄 and 厚 are limited.
Dilu: 因为 iPad 迷你很薄,摔下去就完了。
John: 摔下去。 So 摔 is the verb.
Dilu: 对。第一声。摔。'摔下去'就是 fall down 或者是 drop.
John: So if you drop it or it somehow falls to the ground.

Dilu: 保护套挺需要的,这么薄,摔下去就完了。
John: 这么薄。 That's 2nd tone.
Dilu: 对。第二声。
John: That means 'thin'.
Dilu: 对。是说这个 iPad 迷你很薄。
John: And the opposite of 薄 is ...
Dilu: 厚。厚。
John: Thick.
Dilu: 对。第四声。
John: So this is like a book, or clothing, or a case ...
Dilu: 都会 ...
John: Its like a layer, kind of.

Dilu: 也可以,但是 you'd better emphasize the context.
John: 套子 can also mean 'condom'. In context its usually not a problem, but it could be embarrassing if there's not enough context.
Dilu: 对。So just to be safe say 保护套 when you're referring to 这个手机或者是 iPad 迷你的这个套子。
John: Can we say 手机套?
Dilu: 可以啊。
John: That's a cell phone case.
Dilu: 是的。
John: 好。So what else do they say about the 保护套?

John: 另外, 'In addition'.
Dilu: 对。
John: The tones are ...
Dilu: 两个第四声。另外。
John: So 'In addition I also need to buy ...' what?
Dilu: 保护套。保护套。
John: So there's that 保护 again. Its not the verb 'protect', its the adjective 'protective'.
Dilu: 对。
John: And 套, 4th tone, means 'case'.
Dilu: 没错。保护膜。保护套。
John: So 'protective case'. Can you just say 套子 to mean 'case'?

Dilu: 那个不说'划伤',那个说'抓伤'。
John: In English these are both 'scratch', but in Chinese they're different.
Dilu: 还是会有一点不一样。
John: In this case we're talking about 划伤 what?
Dilu: 屏幕。划伤屏幕。
John: 屏幕 - 2nd tone, 4th tone - that means 'screen'. So we're talking about a screen of the iPad mini.
Dilu: 没错。
John: He's saying that won't happen, it won't scratch the screen.
Dilu: So besides 屏幕,this girl 另外还要买个保护套。另外还要买个保护套。

April 12, 2013 at 07:40 AM
John: So the verb is ...
Dilu: 划伤。划伤。第二声和第一声。
John: And 划伤 - 2nd, 1st - means 'scratch' some kind of shiny surface.
Dilu: 就是有一些光滑的表面 ...
John: Shiny surface.
Dilu: ... 可以被划伤。比如说:车的表面。
John: A car. You can scratch a car.
Dilu: 还有桌子。
John: Or a table top. What about eyeglasses.
Dilu: 对。眼镜也可以划伤。
John: Now what if we talk about a cat scratching someone.

John: That 贴, 1st tone, is 贴膜的贴。
Dilu: 对。贴膜的贴。'不好贴'就是 not easy to 贴。
John: It'll be a pain, its a lot more trouble to add the film.
Dilu: 是的。
John: So the 了 - again. It won't be easy to apply the film 'any more'.
Dilu: However,这个男的他觉得不用贴膜。
John: But the girl doesn't accept that.
Dilu: 对。她说:那不会划伤屏幕吗?不会划伤屏幕吗?

John: OK, what is it?
Dilu: 她说:弄脏了就不好贴了。弄脏了就不好贴了。
John: 弄脏 - 4th tone, 1st tone - means 'to make it dirty'.
Dilu: To get it dirty ...
John: OK.
Dilu: ... with your fingers.
John: There's an implied 'if' here.
Dilu: 对。如果弄脏了就不好贴了。
John: That 了 is a change of state. 'If you make it dirty'. Its not dirty now.
Dilu: 对。
John: Then ...
Dilu: 就不好贴了。就不好贴了。

John: 贴膜 means apply this transparent plastic protective ...
Dilu: 对。
John: ... film. And you'll see this a lot in China, this 贴膜 service.
Dilu: Yeah its everywhere, in the subway station, on the street.
John: So you'll see these people with their tiny little stool and their little table, and they'll apply this protective to all kinds of devices.
Dilu: We can talk more about that in the outro??? But let's look at the rest of the sentence.

Dilu: 膜。M-O,第二声。保护膜。
John: This 膜 refers to a 'film' of some kind.
Dilu: 对。这个保护膜就是贴在 iPad 迷你表面的东西。
John: So you put it on the surface, on the screen.
Dilu: 是的。
John: So this 贴保护膜 means to 'apply protective film'.
Dilu: 是的。我们刚刚在 intro 的时候又说过这个词。贴膜。贴膜。Its the short way to say 贴保护膜。

April 12, 2013 at 07:10 AM

Dilu: 没错。因为:我还没贴保护膜。还没贴保护膜。
John: Let's break that down. First is the verb ...
Dilu: 贴。贴。第一声。
John: 1st tone. That means 'to stick', 'adhere' or in this case 'apply'.
Dilu: And the thing is 保护膜。保护膜。
John: 保护 - 3rd tone, 4th tone - that means 'to protect'.
Dilu: 对。
John: In this case, its serving as an adjective meaning 'protective'. A protective what?
Right-Wingnut
April 12, 2013 at 06:42 AM
John: 好用吗就是这个一个吗?
Dilu: 就是这个意思。感觉:怎么样?,这个好看吗?,'is it fun to use?'。
John: So it goes beyond just usability. And then what's her answer?
Dilu: 别摸。别摸。
John: So she didn't answer the question. She's telling him 'don't touch it'.
Dilu: 对。摸 - 第一声。就是 touch 或者是 feel 的意思。
John: So we're talking about touching the screen of a touchscreen device.
Dilu: 对。
John: Its 摸 - 1st tone.

John: Which is it - 'she is not bored anymore' or 'the commute is not boring anymore' ?
Dilu: My guess - both.
John: Chinese doesn't differentiate between those two. Got it.
Dilu: 然后这个男的他说:我试试看好用吗?好用吗?
John: So 'let me try it - is it easy to use?'. Is that what 好用 means here?
Dilu: 其实'有用'有很多 other meanings other than 'easy to use'.
John: In English you'd probably ask 'What do you think of it?', or 'Are you happy with it?'.
Dilu: 'How do you like it?'.
Right-Wingnut
April 12, 2013 at 06:30 AM
John: So 的路上 means 'on the way'. So she's referring to her 'commute' (is that really a noun??).
Dilu: 对。
John: To and from work. So 'once I got the iPad mini, commuting to and from work ...'
Dilu: 就不无聊了。
John: '... is no longer boring'. Or 'I'm no longer bored'.
Dilu: 对。这里有一个'了',就是 any more。说她以前没有 iPad 迷你的时候,上下班的路上会很无聊。
John: So now 不无聊了 - not boring anymore, not bored anymore.
Dilu: 对,a change of state.

Dilu: 对。有了它我上下班路上就不无聊了。
John: Let's look at that first part. 上下班 - that means 'go to work and come back from work'.
Dilu: 对。上班和下班。
John: And then after that we have 路上 - what is the relationship here?
Dilu: 她说的就是:上班路上和下班路上。就是这些时间。
John: 的路上。
Dilu: 没错。
John: So could we add a 的 there?
Dilu: 可以。上班的路上、下班的路上。上下班的路上。

John: Once I have had this, after I have started having this. Its kind of hard to translate that way. But note that this pattern also works for hypothetical things.
Dilu: 对。对,也可以说:如果有了什么什么,就什么什么。
John: Can you give an example of that.
Dilu: 有了很多钱,我就不用上班了。
John: Once I have a lot of money, I don't have to go to work any more.
Dilu: 对。
John: So a hypothetical. In this case she's talking about 'once she got the iPad mini'.

April 12, 2013 at 06:10 AM
3:04
John: There's quite a bit to look at in this sentence. Let's start off with 有了。We just take the verb 有,we add a 了. Its the change of state - you didn't have it and now you have it.
Dilu: 但是我们看一下这个 pattern。有了什么什么,就什么什么了。
John: In this case its like 'now that I have this, this is the result'.
Dilu: 然后她的意思其实就是:有了这个以后,发生了什么。

John: 'It really suits me'.
Dilu: 对。或者是适合做什么。
John: Or 适合 somebody do something.
Dilu: 没错。比如说:筷子很适合吃面条。
John: 'Chopsticks are well suited to eating noodles'. That is true - I've had that problem before. Moving along, what does the girl say?
Dilu: 她说:有了它我上下班路上就不无聊了。有了它我上下班路上就不无聊了。

John: Alright. What is the guy's assessment of the iPad mini?
Dilu: 他说这个 iPad 迷你很适合女孩子玩儿。
John: So it really suits girls' use.
Dilu: 没错。适合。适合。第四声和第二声。
John: 4th tone, 2nd tone. We're not going to get into the other word that is easily confused with this word, but 适合 is a verb.
Dilu: 对。是一个动词。
John: And it needs to be followed by something.
Dilu: 你可以说:适合人。比如说:这件衣服很适合我。

John: So in the beginning we're talking about the iPad mini.
Dilu: 对。中文叫:iPad 迷你。iPad 迷你。
John: So the Chinese for 'mini' is 迷你.
Dilu: 对。
John: Do we really have to do the tones?
Dilu: Yes, you have to do the tones. 第二声和第三声。迷你。
John: 2nd tone, 3rd tone.
Dilu: 但是 iPad 是没有中文的。所以你可以说 iPad 迷你。
John: So we get a little break from the tones for the word 'iPad' but then you have to 迷你。
Dilu: 对。
