I had an issue with the meaning too, but it definitely sounds like zhang to me, and it definitely sounds like third tone.
Google search:
"像了不太一样" - no results
"长了不太一样" - 4 results
"长得不太一样" - 741 000 results
I tried to see if the le might actually sound like de, but it still sounds like le to me. However I have been pulled up over this before - when I swore I was hearing le but someone else with more listening experience swore it was a de. In any case, I'm more confident about zh-ang than I am about l-e.

hmmm, that's exactly what I thought at first and it certainly sounds like a zhang. But it didn't make sense to me. Dilu is making the point that the two types of sand don't look the same. This is why I went for xiang 像，i.e. appearance. Or have I misunderstood her meaning?

yeah, i couldn't hear the ta either, but I can definitely hear the men and it makes no sense without the ta beforehand. I think it's just one of those things that gets muffled/dropped in full-speed speech. You're right about the gender neutrality, but i must admit i tend to just go with whichever ta my google pinyin input tool comes up with in the interests of speed. You'll likely find quite a few ta errors in my transcripts - put it down to my laziness.
