John: I know China's not the only place where that's a problem. But anyway, that's our lesson for today, and if you have questions you can come to ChinesePod.com and ask us.

Dilu: 或者是你有开会的故事或者是用会议室的experience,也可以让我们知道。

John: And if you're in a meeting right now listening to ChinesePod, don't get caught.

Dilu: 好。今天的课先到这里,我们下次再见。

John: 再见。

John: But I've heard that there are a lot of companies where the boss just wants to have a meeting to just talk about stuff, and they're the only one talking and everyone else is just listening, and they're just going on and on. Have you heard about a lot of people having this experience in China?

Dilu: 那一定有,一定有。要看那个公司的情况,可能在外企会好一些,但是可能在中国的一些公司里面。你听就会很长很长很长。

John: Is it normal?

Dilu: Not to me.

John: So you worked at a couple of different companies, and are they meeting crazy or what?

Dilu: 有一些公司,它们会有一些很好的会议室。那在会议室你可以用powerpoint,你可以用那个叫投影仪。

John: A projector.

Dilu: 对。所以这些会议室会比较抢手,大家开会都想去那边开会,或者是有一些培训,或者是面试新员工,都要用会议室。但是很多的小公司其实也无所谓。

John: So Dilu, I think a lot of companies outside of China have this meeting culture where sometimes people are in the 会议室 for a good part of the day. I know a guy who's from an American company, he's now working in 上海, he says that every Monday they're in the meeting room for eight hours, all day long.

Dilu: 是吗?每一个星期一[得]开八个小时的会。

John: 对。

Dilu: 他们要说什么?他的老板是中国人吗?

John: 应该是中国人。

Dilu: 真的?

Dilu: 对,是那个字但是说一声就是 ‘let me know'

John: Is that the same as 说以下?

Dilu: 这个是一样的, 说一声,说以下,都可以

John: Is that the same as 说说?

Dilu: 啊,不一样。说说就有点像是 talk about

John: 哦,but its just 'let me know, like quickly'

Dilu: 对

John: So its either 说一下 or..

Dilu/John: 说一声

Dilu/John: 对, OK

John: All-right, that's the end of the dialogue, so lets listen one more time

Dilu: 对

John: cancel their meeting

Dilu: 取消用这个会议室

John: OK, but he says 如果中间有人取消, this 中间 that means like in the middle?

Dilu: 恩,他说得中间就是[从]现在一只到五点,这个钟点

John: So its like in the middle of this block of time before 5pm

Dilu: 对

John: OK, so if someone cancels then...

Dilu: 对,就是现在,到现在没有安排

John: 暂时 is that kind of formal?

Dilu: 恩,有一点小 formal

John: 哈,一点小 formal, just a little bit, OK...

Dilu: 刚想起来。刚想起来。

John: 'I've just remembered'. So 想 can mean 'to think', but if you say 想起来 its 'I just thought of it', 'I just remembered'.

Dilu: 没错。刚想起来,三点到四点我可能还在外面。

John: So he'll be out, and then 5 to 6 ...

John: So 'the boss needs to meet a client'. How did you say that?

Dilu: 会见。会见。两个第四声。其实就是'见'的意思。

John: So 见 means to meet someone, to see someone. 会见 is two 4th tones, Its a more formal way of saying meet with someone.

Dilu: 没错。更加正式一些。

John: And 'clients' again is ...

Dilu: 客户。客户。两个第四声。

John: Now they do find an empty slot. When is it?

Dilu: 三点到四点有一个空档。

John: 空档, two 4th tones. This 空 is the same as 有空.

Dilu: 对。是一样的。空档。

John: So 空档 is an empty slot in a schedule.

Dilu: 这样也可以。

John: OK.

Dilu: 一点半到三点销售部要面试新员工。

John: So 'the sales team have to interview new employees'.

Dilu: 对。销售部 - another department.

John: 销售 - that's 1st tone, 4th tone.

Dilu: 对。第一声和第四声。销售。销售部要面试新员工。要面试新员工。

John: OK, now you might be tempted to think that he's asking 'how will you arrange the afternoon', 'how are you planning to arrange the afternoon meetings'

Dilu: 枪手,枪手。两个第三声

John: Two 3rd tones. This might look like a noun, but it's not a noun, it's an adjective

Dilu: 对,是一个形容词,就是很受欢迎

John: So it's something that's really in demand, everyone wants it

Dilu: 对

John: Then it's 枪手

Dilu: 对,会议室很枪手

John: So what other things are often 枪手?

Dilu: 在中国过年的时候火车票很枪手

John: 啊, OK, so around chinese new year it's hard to get train tickets, everyone wants 'em, they're really in demand, and they're also limited. So you can use 枪手 as an adjective

John: OK, so I think that by the time they finish their meeting, it will be time for lunch. OK, so you can't get your meeting in before lunch

Dilu: 恩,而且你不可以[再会一时]吃饭

John/Dilu: 哈哈哈

John: OK, That's not allowed. All-right, and then what's the next thing?

John: So I estimate he's not coming anymore or I'm guessing he's not coming anymore, that kind of thing

Dilu: 恩, 对,或者说我估计今天要加班

John: So, I'm thinking we're probably going to have to work overtime again today

Dilu: 对

John: OK, now let's look at the sentence again, ok, so one more time, what is the sentence?

Dilu: 等他门开完估计要吃午饭了

John: So once they're finished with their meeting, I estimate they're gonna eat lunch in the meeting room. Is that what they're saying?

Dilu: 估计要吃午饭了

John: So 估计, 1st tone, 4th tone, what does this mean?

Dilu: 这个词的翻译是 estimate

John: OK, it's a verb, it's kind of like English, 'I guess' or 'I reckon'

Dilu: 或者是 ‘I think'

John: Maybe you know, these kinds of meanings

Dilu: 对,很多人会用可能

John: Right, 可能, maybe

Dilu: 好

John: First of all, we start off with a verb, what is it?

Dilu: 等,等。第三声

John: OK, but this doesn't mean 'wait'. Um, you can think of it as like 'If we wait until they finish', but it's really more of like a 'once they finish'

Dilu: 对,等他们开完,等他们开完

John: So this means 开完会,like finish their meeting right?

Dilu: 对

John: OK, so once they've finished their meeting, then what?

Dilu: 技术部在开会,技术部在开会

John: So 技术部,3 4th tones, that's the tech department right?

Dilu: 对, 技术,两个第四声,就是 tech, 部就是我们说的[不通]的 department, 部门

John: OK, and he can't just really wait until they're finished right? What's the deal with that?

John: All-right, so we're going to listen to a dialogue between a guy who wants to use the meeting room and a, the receptionist or whatever who's in charge of scheduling it
