John: Really? So 八卦 can be 'gossip', but it can also be 'gossipy'.

Dilu:

John: Now in English, 'gossip' can be a person - 'he's a gossip'. Can you say in Chinese

John: Got it. That's all we've got for today. If you have any questions, come to ChinesePod.com.

Dilu:

John:

John: But 聊八卦, that's pretty normal [???????]

John: Really?

Dilu:

John: So this type of 打赌 situation, is this common? Betting on the boss's mood?

Dilu:

John:

Dilu: 对。

John: 4th tone, 2nd tone, what is that?

Dilu:

John: So you're some kind of cheater.

Dilu: 对。

John: In the dictionary it says 'rascally', 'shameless'. You get the idea - someone who's not following the rules.

John: Alright, let's listen.

John: Tcheah-heah.

Dilu:

John: I think we have an English word that's kind of outdated but very similar in meaning which is [??]. You're scoffing at them. If you look up [??] in the dictionary, it says it expresses impatience, contempt or disbelief. And that's what 切 expresses basically.

Dilu: 是的。

John: Is that a car tyre, or a bike tyre.

John: OK, and then what happened to the tyre?

Dilu:

John: So it exploded, it blew out.

Dilu:

John: So the other coworkers aren't happy that he actually knew what was going on, and then got them all to bet. So what did they say to him?

Dilu: 还有[?]他们,they made a sound:切。

John: Hang on, so they're talking about the elevator in the office.

Dilu: 对。

John: So how did you say 'the same elevator'?

Dilu:

John: 'The same elevator', and 部 is the measure word for an elevator.

Dilu: 是的。

John: And in the elevator, what did the boss say?

Dilu:

John: Or maybe if you're talking about an old friend and you want to know how she's doing, did she ever find a boyfriend, or whatever, you might hear ...

Dilu:

John: She got divorced quite a while ago. She got married and then divorced.

Dilu:

John: You get the idea. Let's keep going, we're almost done with the dialog. How did the guy know what happened to the boss?

就是you have done something a long time ago。

John: Can we have one or two other examples of that 早就 something 了.

Dilu: John,

John: Yeah, my new cell phone.

Dilu:

John: So its not new. I think one example I've heard a couple of times is: someone asks another person who looks pretty young 'have you graduated yet?'

John: 及格, two 2nd tones.

Dilu:

John: To pass a test. Then what happens?

Dilu: 是的。

John: Two first tones.

Dilu:

John: And what's one of the other coworkers betting?

Dilu:

John: That's the business deal falling through.

John: So that's the bet, and then the other girl wants in too. What does she say for 'I want in'?

Dilu:

John: 'I'll also participate in the event'.

Dilu:

John: Does that mean 'what are we betting on' or 'whats the bet', or what does that mean exactly?

What's the bet?

John: So 'what are we betting on', 'what do you get if you win'.

John: So he starts off the suggestion with 不如. Doesn't that mean 'it would be better to ...'?

John: It's like 'why not' do this.

John: So they've eaten their fill, and they have nothing to do.
