Intermediate - Fight on a Plane

J: So: I don't care about that. OK. Now culturally, this kind of little argument is fairly common, unfortunately, right ?

J: So 只能 is kind like "I'll have to"

J: So it's a command and it's pretty rude, right ?

D: 嗯, 是的。给我放下。

J: OK, and he goes on. What does he say ?

D: 我告诉你们，我哥可是公安局长 ！

J: So his older brother 可是, this 可 doesn't mean "but", right ?

D: 这个不是, 这个是一个强调的用法, emphasize

J: So "My brother IS" what ?

D: 公安局长

J: So 公安局 is like a police station

D: 对

J: Public security bureau

D: 对, 两个第一声, 还有一个第二声 - 公安局

D: 你凭什么动我的东西 ！ 你凭什么动我的东西 ！

J: So 凭什么. 凭 is a second tone, right ?

D: 嗯, 对

J: and it literally means "on what basis", but you may use this kind like: What makes you think you can move my stuff ?

D: 就是: 为什么 ?

J: 你干吗动我的东西 ?

D: 哎, 就是这个意思 ! 你干什么, 你凭什么动我的东西 ! 给我放下 ！

J: 给我放下！ So 给我 is often like "for me" , like "can you do something for me ?"

D: 但是这句话是一个 order。

D(2): 来得[正是时候]

D(last): flight [attendant]

J: OK. But this where the [flight tension rises] up, right ?

D: 嗯, 对。这个时候要放行李的那个乘客, 他说: 你来得正好！ 你来得正好！

J: 来得正好！ What does that mean ?

D: 就是, 就是来得正适时候

J: So you came at just the right time

D: 对

J: 来得正好

D: 因为现在我们很需要你。

J: OK. But then the rude guy he goes off again, right ? What does he say ?

D: 因为这个 flight intendant 要动行李, 所以这个 mister Rude 就说...

J(2): It's [just] like...

D (3): 但是没有 M. Rude [??] rude。

It's not 那么, it's not 这样, I see what the sentence means, but I don't see what is this missing word...

J: OK. And 理 - third tone - means "to pay attention to", right ?

D: 啊, 对。

J: So literally it's like "I am too lazy to pay attention to you", but it's also like " It's not worth my time to pay attention to you"

D: 嗯, 对。懒得理你。我懒得理你。

J: Is this really rude ?

D: 有一点 rude, 但是没有 M. Rude [??] rude。

J: Yeah, actually I've got to say I've... I've been told this a few times, but I'm...

D: 你老婆吗 ?

J: Alright, so second tone, first tone, fourth tone

D: 啊, 经常你在骂人的时候就会怎么说

J: OK. And then the next line, what does he say ?

D: 我懒得理你 ！ 我懒得理你 ！

J: So 懒 - third tone - means "lazy", right ?

D: 对, literally 是 "lazy" 的意思, 但是这边呢, 是指... "不想 waste my time"

J: OK. Then he repeats "你" at the end. Why ?

D: 哦, 这也是一种非常口语的说法。你买得起吗你 ？ 放在最后。

J: And it's what ? Kind of rude ?

D: 感觉[????]不是很友好。

J: Can you give us another example of this ?

D: 干吗你 ?

J: Like: What are you doing ?

D: 你是谁啊你 ?

J: Who [are ?] you ? Alright.

D: 言 / 念 (?)得很好。

J: That was my tone of voice's translation. Alright, so then he asks [???], what does the first guy say ?

hmm, it sounds strange to me, but I couldn't say for sure :)

I was wondering if if was not a 就, actually. But I'm not sure. Is it possible to say 就是的 ?

D(1): 省略[了]

D(2): I think it's just 哎, 是...是的。with the first 是 only half pronounced.

D: 这边其实是省略的两个字, 你当飞机是你家的飞机 ？

J: So it's like: you treat this airplane as if it's your own, you think this is your airplane, something like that ?

D: 哎, (就)是的。

J: And then the next thing he says is...

D: 你买得起吗你 ？ 你买得起吗你 ？

J: So 买得起 means afford to buy

D: 嗯, 对

J: To be able to afford to buy

D: 对。你买得起吗 ? 就是: Can you afford it ?

J: Can you afford the airplane ?

D: 对。

John: And then he says 'I can come whenever I want to come', because he has the ticket.

Dilu: 是的。

John: How did he say that?

Dilu: 我想什么时候来就什么时候来。

John: So this is a pattern we've seen before. And then the rude guy, what does he say?

Dilu: 者个很有趣啊。他说：哟，你当飞机是你家的？

John: 哟. What does that mean? 哟.

Dilu: 谁让你们来得这么晚。谁让你们来得这么晚。

John: So 'who made you come so late', or 'who told you to come so late'.

Dilu: 其实就是说：这是你们的错，你们来得太晚了。

John: Its like 'whose fault is it that arrived so late?'

Dilu: 对。

John: So still being rude. He's consistent.

Dilu: 然后另外那个男的好象也很生气。他说：我买了票的，我想什么时候来就什么时候来。

John: So 我买了票的 - this 的 is ...

Dilu: 也是肯定嘛。

Dilu (4): 顺序

John: In the next phrase he says ...

Dilu: 先来后到。先来后到。

John: 先来 - that's 'first come'. You expect 'first serve', but then its ...

Dilu: 不是不是。

John: ... later arrive.

Dilu: 先来后到。就是说：这个事情是有［选取］的。先来的人先做事情，后到的人后做事情。

John: So whoever's first ... it really is the same as 'first come first served', but [????] a little different in meaning.

Dilu: 有点像［了？］。

John: OK, 先来后到。And then he says what?

J(1): ... take these one by ...

J(6): ... that is nothing ...

J: OK. So let's take this one by one. So the first phrase he used was:

D: 那我不管。那我不管。

J: SO 管 - third tone

D: 嗯

J: this is like the 管 in 管理

D: 啊, 对

J: meaning "to manage", right ?

D: 第三声, guǎn

J: So it's kind like manage here but it's more like just care about it, just have anything to do with it, even think about it, right ?

D: 对。我不管, 那我不管

J: So I don't care about that, there is nothing to do with me, I'm not worrying about that

Yeah, I usually paste the "most correct" version again at the end of each section, but it's up to you.

Argh, so many mistakes ! I'm sorry, even if I listen to the lesson with Audacity and that I slow down the sound, sometimes I can't clearly hear what they say, especially John. J: But the "go" comes at the end

D: 你自己去找地方放。

J: OK. But the other guy insists and he wants to put it here, right ?

D: 嗯。他说: 我肯定要放在这里的。我肯定要放在这里的。

J: OK. So this 的 at the end of the sentence, [I'm definitely put it here. Why 的 ? ]

D: 就是, 就是肯定嘛, 肯定的语气。

J: OK, but the end of this statement, what does he say ?

J: OK. So 放 is a verb like put the luggage somewhere, but 放去, like, is that attached to the verb or is that like "go somewhere" ?

D: 对, 这个是 go somewhere 的意思, 但是呢, 他的语气是比较 informal 的。其实这句话可以说: 你自己去找地方放。
