Intermediate - Upgrading software - Poddies collaboration
John: Intermediate listeners this is chinesepod, I'm John.
John: And today we have a lesson for all you people out there that use software that sometimes needs to be upgraded
John: So 软件 of course is software, 3rd tone, 4th tone
John: And then upgrading, upgrade, what is that again?
John: OK, 1st tone, 2nd tone. So we're going to hear those words in this lesson coming up. We will hear the Chinese take on the whole thing, so let's listen.
John: So right away we find out what type of software it is, right?
John: Right, notice Dilu said 一个, in Chinese you can say 'a software', in English you can't. OK, but in this case the software is 防毒, that's two 2nd tones
John: And literally these two characters mean prevent virus, right?
John: So it's anti-virus, virus prevention software
John: OK, so 到期，4th tone, 1st tone, that means to expire
John: To come to the end of the term, you know, that it's valid for
John: So if something is 要 verb 了, it means it is about to verb, so it's about to expire
John: Well to decide whether or not you want to pay for it, you need to evaluate if you like it, right? And what's her evaluation?
John: So 运行 4th tone, 2nd tone, this is a verb we frequently see when you're talking about computer programs, right?
John: Run a program
John: It's not one of those big, slow, bloated pieces of software
John: OK, so just go ahead and 续费。So what is 续费?
John: So continue to pay, in other words 're-up'
John: Pay to have it continue
John: So that's "xu", 续, right?
John: 续费 continue with it, pay for it and to do that you need to click here, right?
John: So 点 is click. And then when she clicks, what happens?
John: So 出来 come out, in other words popped-up, right?
John: So she clicked on something and then...
John: This box, this window popped up allowing her to 升级, right?
John: So some kind of option
John: And this is the word we mentioned before 升级，1st tone, 2nd tone, means to upgrade
John: So give the software an upgrade, huh? So 升级软件 you can also say that, upgrade software
John: OK, so two ways to say it and if you want to upgrade then of course you have to pay, so what's the price?
John: So for one year it's RMB199
John: OK but in the middle we have this 升级产品，产品 what's that?
John: So product, referring to the software
John: OK so that's two 3rd tones, 产品
John: Right, so when you're considering two options, in this case to upgrade or not to upgrade and then you finally come to a decision, you frequently preface your decision with 还是
John: I think this is still the better choice, this is the way I'm going to go 还是
John: OK, it doesn't mean 'or'. Alright, now the guy responds to this 'OK, I'm going to go ahead and upgrade' in kind of a weird way, what does he say?
John: So 这 meaning the payments?
Dilu: Or the upgrading
John: Upgrading at all
John: So he feels that paying for software is like tricking people
Dilu: Can be or the price is tricky. I don't really understand this
John: It's either paying at all because some Chinese people just refuse to pay for software or the idea that you're going to pay for two years so far in advance
John: Throwing your money away or something. Alright, so there is a little bit of this attitude amongst some segments of the population so 骗， 4th tone, means to deceive and this 偏偏 is just kind of making it a little bit lighter.
John: So it's not fraud but he feels that it's just like, you know, taking the money from silly people
John: OK, but the girl feels that it's worthwhile, right? What does she say?
John: 合算，2nd tone, 4th tone, means worth the money, worthwhile?
John: OK, and then he tells her what to do next, he says what?
John: So click "next step", 下一步 is next step, right?
John: And then pay. OK, and the two payment options are?
John: 信用卡 is credit card
John: And the tones are?
John: OK credit card and the other one is?
John: This is something unique to China, the English translation is Alipay, it's like China's Paypal
John: So 支付 literally means pay, right? Similar to 付钱
John: Oh, it's more formal. So just like Paypal has the word pay in the name, 支付宝 also has pay in the name, and 宝 means what? Treasure? Baby?
John: OK something good. Paying goodness. Alright, so what are the tones for this Alipay, the Paypal in China?
John: OK, got it and I think that's the end of the dialogue so let's listen one more time now
John: 当然不会， why?
John: So then you change to another type of anti-virus software
John: Because you always feel like there's a free choice, so why should you pay?
John: Well for me I think there are certain things that you really should pay for to get the best for your money, like I used to pay for anti-virus software because it's just too important.
John: Yeah, I keep renewing it, I keep paying for it because it was important. Now some things you can get something just as good for free so I would do that, but somethings you have to pay for I think
John: Yeah, it's a little bit different.
John: Yeah, I feel like one difference now is because people are using Apps
John: You know, like iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, Android Apps, it's changing a little bit so maybe people will be more willing to pay in the future in China.
John: Alright, we'll see you guys there. 再见
