Dilu: What's wrong seeing the food in your mouth
John: Haha, OK, so that's the Chinese thing, but you're saying it doesn't bother you if other people around you are eating like nananana, super loud
Dilu: 啊,其实也不是,it bothers me sometimes
John: So you have sort of a limit, huh?
Dilu: 啊,对,如果是男人我觉得我会being understandable
John: Ah, so you've got a double-standard going on there
Dilu: 啊,但是女孩子会有点难看那样子

Dilu: 啊,我知道很多的西方人都会觉得吃饭的时候一定要嘴巴一起来,然后不能有声音,是吗
John: 嗯
Dilu: 啊你们觉得为什么一定要这样做呢
John: Because no-one wants to see what's in your mouth
Dilu: 呵呵
John: Or hear the sound of the food being mashed up in your mouth
Dilu: 啊我觉得啊有一些中国人他们吃饭声音很大,而是就是因为他们吃得香
John: Yeah, like three year olds can do that in our country, but we feel like it's part of a good upbringing, you know, to, to close your mouth when you eat and don't be noisy

John: So, Dilu, all Chinese eat really noisily, is that true?
Dilu: 你在中国呆了这么长的时间,你觉得呢
John: Haha, yeah of course there, there's quite a bit of variation between people. So I suppose you're one of those people that eat very quietly and politely
Dilu: 那当然
John/Dilu: 哈哈

John: So, all the other places are full, right? Occupied.
Dilu: 对,所有的位子都坐满了
John: OK, the other seats all have people in them
Dilu: 嗯,你也可以说车厢的位子坐满了
John: Oh, like a bus or train. So this 满 means ‘full’, right? 3rd tone?
Dilu: 对,第三声
John: OK, but the good news is that the guy looks like he’s about to finish eating, right?
Dilu: 对,他快吃完了,他快吃完了
John: OK, so notice we have another pattern here with 了,so 快 something 了

Dilu: 对
John: OK, so then the guy has an idea, what is it?
Dilu: 那我们换个位子吧,换个位子吧
John: So, 换 meaning ‘change’ and 位子 is like a, like a seat, a place
Dilu: 嗯,是的
John: A position. OK, so 位子 is 4th tone and neutral
Dilu: 对,位子,换个位子
John: So, switch to another place but they can’t because…
Dilu: 都坐满了,都坐满了

Dilu: 嗯,当然了,但是这个女孩子觉得这个声音很恶心听见那种声音就觉得恶心
John: So she feels that it’s disgusting
Dilu: 嗯,对,因为那个声音很mwa mwa mwa就很不舒服
John: Alright, the word for disgusting again?

Dilu: 啊,是的是的声音大说明吃得香,吃得香
John: 吃得香,this 香,1st tone, means fragrant, right?
Dilu: 啊,对,你可以说,啊,这个花很香但是这里说吃得香是指,啊,吃得很开心很享受
John: So, nothing actually smells good, it’s just…
Dilu: 啊,没有
John: He’s really into his food
Dilu: 对,我们常常也会说睡得香,睡得香

Dilu: 他说声音大说明吃得香,声音大说明吃得香
John: So, that the noise is loud means, right? Means..说明
Dilu: 对,说明,第一声和第二声
John: It’s kind of like indicates that
Dilu: 嗯,说明表示
John: OK, 表示 is another way to say that, but 说明 often means ‘indicates that’. You wouldn’t use this to say that this word means this, right? It’s like some kind of situation indicates this fact, right?

John: Isn’t there a word 性欲
Dilu: Ah, sexual desire, yes, yes, that’s a word
John: That’s a useful word possibly. OK, but in this case, doesn’t have any more appetite, right?
Dilu: 啊,对
John: So, there’s a 了 in there too, right?
Dilu: 啊,对,没食欲了,没食欲了
John: OK, so she lost her appetite, 没食欲了
Dilu: Yeah, this 了 also refers to a change of state

John: OK, this word 食欲,ah what are the tones?
Dilu: 食欲,第二声和第四声
John: OK, 2nd, 4th, it literally means food desire, right?
Dilu: 哈哈exactly. 没食欲了,I don’t have food desire anymore.
John: So you don’t have an appetite, you lost your appetite because of the disgusting eating noises, right?
Dilu: 啊,对的
John: 食欲,actually you can have other types of desires too, right?

Dilu: 一听我就没食欲了,一听我就没食欲了
John: OK, so here we have an 一。。就。。 pattern, right?

John: The person next to us. Yeah, you see that’s the kind of thing that would be hard to come up with as a native speaker of English
Dilu: 啊
John: So, is this like a pattern, like would you say like the person next to us like you say the place first and then that person
Dilu: 嗯,你可以说前面那辆车,前面那辆车
John: So, that car in front of us
Dilu: 对
John: First the place, and then that thing
Dilu: A thing or a person
John: Can we have one more example
Dilu: 啊,你还可以说香港那家公司

Dilu: 对,我吃不下,吃不下
John: OK, and the reason is?
Dilu: 旁边那个人吃面条声音太大了,旁边那个人吃面条声音太大了
John: So the sound of him eating noodles is too loud. Um, but at the beginning of the sentence we have 旁边那个人,so next to us that person
Dilu: 就是旁边那个人the person next to us

Dilu: 我吃不下,我吃不下
John: OK, so in 吃不下 this 不下 is a complement that tells us something extra about 吃, so in this case what’s going on exactly with the 吃
Dilu: Well most of the time when people say 我吃不下了 means, like, I’m full 我吃饱了,我不可以再吃了
John: OK, so I can’t eat any more
Dilu: 嗯,但是在这里呢啊是不要吃,不想吃
John: Right, she just can’t bring herself to eat any more
Dilu: 是的

John: So, why aren’t you talking any more
Dilu: 对
John: Like why did you suddenly get quiet, that kind of thing?
Dilu: 对,还有你可能会听到小贝贝他说,我不玩了
John: So, I’m not playing any more, I’m not playing with you any more, that kind of thing?
Dilu: 嗯,对,我不玩了
John: I see. Alright, so it’s a change of state with 了. And then the girl says what now?

John: OK, so uh how do we kick-off this dialogue, what does the guy say?
Dilu: 怎么不吃了,怎么不吃了
John: OK, now this 怎么 is not “how”, right?
Dilu: 嗯,是问她为什么,why
John: Yeah, how come you’re not eating
Dilu: 对
John: OK, so 不吃,not eat, but then why is there a 了 on the end?
Dilu: 啊因为刚才在吃现在不吃
John: So she was eating, now she’s not eating, so there has been a change of state
Dilu: That’s right
John: So this 不吃了 is almost like stop eating
