Intermediate - Dinner with the girlfriend's parents - Poddies collaboration
Dilu: Hey guys, you're listening to a Chinesepod Intermediate lesson, my name's Dilu
John: Hey, I'm John
Diu: We're at a family dinner today in a restaurant
John: And it's not an ordinary dinner is it...
Dilu: It's a little awkward
John: So, obviously he's going to try to make a good impression on the Chinese parents
John: OK, so Dilu, first question
John: When the girl introduces Peter to her parents she says 这就是Peter
John: But why doesn't she just say 这是Peter
Dilu: 啊，那肯定这个女孩子一直都跟她爸爸妈妈说Peter, Peter this, Peter that, Peter had a dog, Peter took me to some restaurant所以她就经常会提到Peter那今天呢总算是看到了Peter所以她会说这个就是Peter
Dilu: ...that I was talking [about]
John: So it's the Peter that I have talked about before, the Peter that you've heard so much about
John: OK, I see
John: So this is the same as 叔叔好，阿姨好
John: Yeah, so remember this is the polite way to address your girlfriend's parents if they're Chinese. Now, let me ask a question though. If he had just said 你们好, is that less polite?
John: So, not as polite
John: 你们好 is just kind of saying hi, whereas 叔叔阿姨好 is politely saying hi
John: OK, got it
John: So this 嘛 that's kind of emphasising that he thinks what he's saying is obvious
John: 明显 obvious, OK.
John: And then Peter's response is quite modest, right?
John: So, 过奖 is kind of like 'over praise'
John: OK, so 过奖，what are the tones there?
John: So, you pretty much always say 过奖了，you add the 了
John: Alright, and then he says something else
John: So, it's kind of formulaic, polite things to say
John: I have to continue to work hard
John: Yeah, he also understands Chinese culture because he's being so polite and modest, right?
John: So, 继续努力, that's uh, two 4th tones and then 3rd and 4th, right?
John: Now, one more question. We often use this in work context also, is that right?
John: 好的。Now, what happens next?
John: So, let's first sit down and then talk
John: OK, yeah, we can't see what's going on but apparently they're just standing around
John: So the mother suggests continuing the conversation sitting
John: So, first sit-down then talk
John: Now, I know these questions can be confusing whether it's how long have you been here, how long do you plan to stay, all that, but with this one, 来上海, come to Shanghai, it can only be one, it can only be how long have you been in Shanghai
John: Right, so they use 来，it must be how long have you been in Shanghai. So, can we hear that question again?
John: So, how many years have you been in Shanghai
John: So this 几年了，that 了 on the end, um, it means kind of until now
John: Right, so when you're answering you're also saying until now, so you also have the 了 on the end
John: So his answer is...
John: So, more than two years up until now
John: So, 打算，tells us it's the future, right?
John: And the tones there are...
John: OK, 3rd, 4th and then we have 待多久
John: You can also say 住 here, right?
John: And instead of 多久 you could also say 多长时间，right?
John: Yeah, you have to remember it really well because you're definitely going to be asked
John: OK, but he doesn't have any answer to this question does he
Dilu: 他说现在还不知道，哎wrong answer!
John: Alright, and then what do they say? The mum says something, right?
John: OK, first of all, 我们就晶晶一个孩子
John: So this 就, what does that mean?
John: We just have JingJing, this one child
John: OK, and then?
John: 我们身边，that literally means at our side, right?
John: OK, so same city. Is she implying that they want to live together if they get married?
John: So they're basically saying don't take our daughter away from us
John: We hope our daughter can stay at our side. I find that in Chinese this 身边, at someone's side, is quite common. If you pay attention, you'll noticed it used in a lot of different contexts
Dilu: Are you saying that Chinese people are very needy?
John: Haha, no, like for example if someone calls me on the phone and they ask if I've seen Dilu lately, in English I'd just say oh, she's right here with me now, but in Chinese you would probably say....
John: Yeah, she's right at my side, right?
Dilu: 对啊，what's wrong with that?
John: No, nothing wrong, it's just, uh, takes some getting used to
John: OK, and then what does, uh, Peter say. I think he says something that wins him points
John: So, this verb 定居, the tones are?
John: 4th and 1st, so that means kind of settle down, right?
John: Literally, it's like 'fixed live', right
Dilu: Well if it helps you to understand that word
John: Settle down, like not move, right?
John: Haha, and he doesn't give the greatest answer to that either
John: Alright, so Dilu let's ah, let's find out how this guy did more specifically
John: Alright, so first of all when he greets the parents
John: So he did well because he was polite
John: Then when he gets his Chinese praised
John: So he was modest, right?
John: So, he did well, right?
John: OK, and then, how long have you been in Shanghai, OK not really important and then how long do you plan to stay
John: So, that's a bad answer, right?
John: It's not going to win him points with the parents. OK, but then he says 我可能在上海定居
John: But then the last question
John: And he says 我还没有考虑过，I've never considered it. So, how does he do there?
John: So, all parents hope that the guy marrying their daughter will buy a home before they get married
Dilu: Well, at least they need to have some kind of plan
John: mmm, OK they need some kind of plan to make them feel a bit more at ease about the prospect of a foreigner marrying their daughter
John: 我一点不记得，I don't remember to clearly
John: I think they probably did and I think I probably didn't do much better than Peter
Dilu: Oh, wow, too bad
John: But I eventually proved I'm an OK guy, I guess
John: Or I already have a place I just need a...
Dilu: 哦，那是最好的that's the best, marry her now
John: The interview is over, huh?
Dilu: 我相信我们的poddies肯定会有很多这样的经历so why don't you come to Chinesepod and tell us about your stories
John: Yeah, we're really interested in hearing about the cultural stuff that you know, as well as the vocabulary and grammar, so come to Chinesepod.com and let's have it
Dilu: Alright, we'll see you there, 再见
