John: Hi, this is an Intermediate lesson on Chinesepod. My name is John.
Dilu: Hi guys, 我是Dilu
John: And so today we're talking about an issue with...
John: OK, so plane tickets, that's 1st tone, 4th tone
John: And this is an issue that foreigners in China often have, I think it's partly a cultural issue
John: Right, and it's related to the names on the 机票 so let's, uh, say no more and listen to the dialogue
John: Yeah, so right in the first line of the dialogue we hear clearly what the problem is, what is it?
John: OK, 护照上的名字，I'm wondering, can we just say 护照的名字
Dilu: 护照的名字sounds more like the name of the passport
John: The name of the passport, OK, so you want to say the name on the passport, you have to say...
John: OK, and then the name on the ticket
John: OK, now the tones for passport are?
John: OK, 机票 we know is 1st tone 4th
John: Alright, and what's the guy's explanation?
John: OK, 简称 so that's 3rd tone, 1st tone, it's like, uh, simplified name
John: Yeah, so 称呼 basically a name, right?
John: OK, so it's the short-form
John: Now I want to ask you, what if it's slightly different, like, um, like what if your full name is Francisco and your nickname is Backo (sp?!)
John: So, is that a 简称？
John: OK, so what about from William to Will
John: What about from William to Bill
Dilu: 啊？ Totally different, no
John: OK. Alright, so 简称 is something that you will hear but it's a little bit restricted, it's not the same as nickname
John: OK, so what's the problem exactly then?
John: OK, so in this sentence we're missing the word "if", but it's kind of implied, right?
