John: Hey guys, this is an Intermediate lesson, I'm John Pasden.
John: So, 志愿者，that 者 on the end tells us it's a kind of person, right?
John: Right and in this case it's a volunteer
John: So the tones are 4, 4, 3, right?
John: OK, now the context is that these are Chinese people talking about volunteering, so let's listen in on what kind of, uh, opportunities there are for young Chinese people
John: OK, so I have a question for you
John: Uh, what's the first word of the dialogue?
John: So, sisters, right?
John: But they're not really sisters, it's kind of like girls, right?
John: Now, if I want to address a group of girls, can I call them 姐妹们
John: Is it because the 姐妹们 kind of includes yourself in the group of sisters?
Dilu: 是的，除非你觉得你就是one of the姐妹s
John: OK. I get you. But if you're a guy then you use
John: OK, to address a group of guys if you're a guy
John: Alright, got it, so, um, but one girl's missing, right? What's the question?
John: OK, 还少一个。So, you're probably used to 少 meaning few. But in this case 少 is more like a verb meaning to be short, to be missing
John: So, how come we're still missing one
John: Right, so this usage of 少 is actually pretty common so you'll want to get used to that
John: So, where's the girl?
John: 农村，doesn't that mean the countryside?
Dilu: 这个词呢可以是说countryside也可以是说一个small village
John: So this is a village in the countryside
John: 农村，so it's 2nd tone, 1st tone
John: So, she went to a small village in the west to...
John: So, 当, 1st tone, meaning to become or to be
John: So, where did she go?
John: OK, 西部, 1st tone, 4th tone, that means the west
John: The western part of the country
Dilu: The west area
John: So, what about the American West?
John: And where in China's west did she go?
