Dilu: 你有当过志愿者吗

John: 有

Dilu: 你做了【些】什么?

John: Uh, the last one I went to was we went to a migrant school, you know for, for kids whose parents are from the countryside they don't have a lot of money

Dilu: 嗯

John: And we helped paint the walls

Dilu: 哇,很有意义

John: Yeah, Shanghai has some of these volunteer organisations that do stuff like that

Dilu: 嗯,像很多的学校也会有这样的志愿者活动,那我觉得是非常有意义的

Dilu: 嗯,对,那课文里面说的是你们都是活雷锋因为雷锋已经死了所以说如果有一个人很愿意帮助别人她们就会说你是活雷锋

John: Ah, so a living Lei Feng

Dilu: 嗯

John: So, a lot of 志愿者 are 活雷锋

Dilu: 对,很多的志愿者都是活雷锋。John在国外是不是有很多志愿者活动啊?

Couple of square brackets above. Can't pick them up, even with media player on slower speed. The latter sounds more like "ken dao" but I think "pengdao" makes more sense, as in Lei Feng 'bumping into' other people with difficulties and just helping them'.

John: OK, so this lesson's all about 当志愿者, right?

Dilu: 嗯,没错,当志愿者

John: But then at the end they mention a very famous guy

Dilu: 啊,就是雷锋,雷锋。那中国人都知道雷锋

John: So is he a 志愿者?

Dilu: 啊她不是志愿者但是他很喜欢帮助别人比如说老奶奶过马路她就会把老奶奶辅到马路对面,【啊反正】就是这样类似的事情,啊他【碰到】别人有困难就会去帮助别人

12:00

Dilu: 嗯

John: And then we have another point that we want to emphasise down below

Dilu: 啊,对,后面还有一句话志愿者是去帮助那里的人又不是去旅游的

John: So, 又不是 so what is this 又 doing?

Dilu: 又就是为了强调不是,不是去旅游的和又不是去旅游的

John: So, it's emphasizing again, emphasizing that it's NOT for the purpose of travel

Dilu: 嗯,这【本】课文里面有很多强调啊!

Dilu: 啊,但是我不去听上去比较比较正常就没有太多的emotion在里面

John: It's too normal

Dilu: 嗯

John: OK, 我才不去呢,so what does that add?

Dilu: 就是她觉得这个吃也吃不好住也住不好这件事就是stupid to go there

John: 呵呵 There's no way I'm going!

Dilu: 对

John: That kind of thing, right

Dilu: 嗯,就是非常强调否定【呢】这种感觉

John: So, emphasising she does NOT want to go

Dilu: 是的

John: OK, so the 才 and the 呢 both serve that purpose

John: So, it's emphasis. Instead of just saying you don't eat well, it's more like you don't even eat well, right? 吃也吃不好

Dilu: 嗯,吃也吃不好住也住不好睡也睡不好

John: 哈哈。I got it. OK, so, emphasis.

Dilu: 对

John: And then finally we have some more emphasis

Dilu: 嗯,她说我才不去呢,我才不去呢

John: So, she could have just said 我不去, right?

Dilu: 嗯,没错,条件

John: So they're talking about the living conditions. I think in English we'd say life over there is hard. Life is hard. But in Chinese you talk about the conditions.

Dilu: Ah, literally 对,吃也吃不好住也住不好

John: OK, 吃不好 means you eat not well

Dilu: 嗯

John: 住不好,so you live not well

Dilu: 嗯,就是那边的条件不好

John: But why are you repeating the verbs like this? 吃也吃不好

John: But if you say 有意义 it means meaningful

Dilu: 啊,对,两个是完全不一样的

John: So, if you want to say it's very meaningful you say...

Dilu: 有意义,有意义

John: OK and then they move on to talk about what it's like to live in the 西部, right?

Dilu: 啊,也就是说meaning有两个意思,第一个意思是意义,第二个意思是意思

John: 哈哈

Dilu: Come on

John: Alright, this is getting confusing but what we want to say is that 意义 is kind of a high-level meaning like the meaning of life, you know

Dilu: 一般性都是比较好的意思感觉这个,这个程度比较好比较高

John: Right, whereas 意思 is often for like, 'what does this word mean', right?

Dilu: 嗯,当志愿者多有意义啊,多有意义啊

John: So, this 多 is just kind of like 很, right?

John: So this could be to sign-up as a 志愿者 or it's also the same word you use when you're talking about signing up for classes in school

Dilu: 她说我还以为要去政府报名什么的,我还以为要去政府报名什么的

John: So, I thought you had to go to the government to sign-up or something. So, 去政府, right?

Dilu: 嗯,政府,第四声和第三声,表示的是government

John: But in English we don't really go to the government. You usually go to a government office or something, so does this refer to a government office?

Dilu: 对,第一声和轻声

John: And it's kind of like talk it over, try to come to a decision

Dilu: And then two things happened 大家一商量就去了,一商量就去了

John: And we can be sure of that because after they talk about 网友, right?

Dilu: 嗯

John: Online friends

Dilu: 对,几个网友都用同样的想法,都用同样的想法

Dilu: 嗯

John: Alright, got it. So, the answer?

Dilu: 好像是在论坛里聊天

John: So, it seems she was in a forum chatting?

Dilu: 嗯,好象是,好像表示不太确定

John: Yeah, so 好像,3rd tone, 4th tone, uh, notice that Chinese people frequently use that when they're not totally sure and we like to translate that as 'it seems' whereas in English when we're not totally sure we often say 'I think'

Dilu: 对

John: And then the 的 comes at the end

Dilu: 嗯

John: Alright, but one question real quick

Dilu: 嗯

John: Couldn't I've just said 她怎么找到了这个机会,just use a 了 don't use 是。。。的

Dilu: 嗯,这个是。。。的结构在这句话里面实在强调一种方式

John: Right, so it's emphasising how and often when you're asking a question about how something happens or other details about the past, you use the 是。。。的 pattern
