John: Right, ah, there's a lot of things on the road in China that can get you angry. If your driver's getting in fights, that's not a good thing. I know someone who that happened to.
Dilu: 哦,那希望我们今天这节课对我们的听众来说是比较有用的吧
John: Yes, so we hope you can find a 老司机 or at least a 好司机
Dilu: 啊,是的,是的
John: Alright, so we'll see you on chinesepod.com
Dilu: 我们下次再见
John: 再见

John: Yeah, I've heard also that it's very difficult to find a personal driver because the personality is really important.
Dilu: 啊,就是司机的性格
John: Yeah, because if the driver flies off the handle everytime someone cuts him off you're going to be pretty nervous every time you get in the car.
Dilu: 啊,还有一些司机好像会脾气不太好有打架

John: Yeah, for example, 驾龄,how many years you've been driving, right?
Dilu: 嗯,对。还有一半开一年车会扣几分
John: Yeah, 扣几分. Yeah, that's specifically related to driving. Also, what kind of 记录 were we talking about?
Dilu: 哦,事故和违章记录
John: So, accidents and violations records, right?
Dilu: 嗯,对。那这些呢都是和司机的面试有关,那除了这些条件你觉得一个好的司机还要有些什么样的要求呢,因为我听说很多人觉得找司机非常难

对话
15:41
John: Alright, so this dialogue was, uh, was kind of specialised wasn't it. I think it's particularly useful for anyone that needs to interview a driver, but if you're not interviewing drivers you might not use this stuff everyday, right?
Dilu: 啊,对,这个面试是比较特别的,那除了最后几句话我们可以用在别的面试里面,那其他的话好像不太常见
16:03

December 24, 2011 at 11:25 AM

John: OK, and then the results
Dilu: 结果我们过几天会通知你
John: So, 结果,that's the results
Dilu: 对,第二声和第三声
John: So, the results in a few days we will notify you
Dilu: 对,过几天会通知你,过几天会通知你
John: So, 过几天,after a few days.
Dilu: 没错
John: OK, 通知,two 1st tones, that means to notify
Dilu: 嗯,是的,那这句话也是非常典型的面试的结束语

John: And then...
Dilu: 薪酬,薪酬,第一声和第二声
John: OK
Dilu: 你的期望薪酬是多少?
John: OK. An important interview question. And then finally they wind it up with a few polite formalities, huh?
Dilu: 谢谢你来参加面试
John: So, 面试 you have to 参加 you participate in an interview
Dilu: 没错,参加面试

John: Wait, how is that possible that you can know all the roads in all those provinces?
Dilu: 啊,他的驾龄很长所以他很有经验
John: OK, maybe that's what you say in an interview too, huh. Alright, so what comes up next are the typical interview questions to wind it up, right?
Dilu: 啊,是一个典型的面试问题,那你的期望薪酬是多少
John: So, this is expected salary, right?
Dilu: 对,期望薪酬
John: So, 期望,what are the tones there?

12:29
John: Wait a minute, is this "shou xi" or "shu xi"?
Dilu: 词典上面是"shu2 xi1"但是我们平时也会说"shou2 xi1"
John: You hear both, right?
Dilu: 对,两个都可以
John: OK, and then you also hear the one-syllable form, right?
Dilu: 啊,就是熟(shou2)
John: Or?
Dilu: 熟(shu2)
John: OK, so 熟悉(shu2)熟悉(shou2) they're all the same
Dilu: 都可以,那这【自】有一些特别上海浙江江苏都很熟
13:01
chris
December 24, 2011 at 08:11 AM
11:59
Dilu: 下一个问题是上海和上海周边的路都熟悉吗
John: OK, so Shanghai and Shanghai 周边, what is this 周边?
Dilu: 上海周边【zhi de】就是后面我们说道的浙江江苏
John: So, the surrounding area
Dilu: 对
John: Surrounding provinces
Dilu: 上海和上海周边的路都熟悉吗
John: OK, so 熟悉,that means "familiar", right?
Dilu: 对,第二声和第一声
12:29
chris
December 24, 2011 at 08:03 AM
11:31
Dilu: 对,那罚款,第二声和第三声,就是因为你违章了所以要付钱
John: Right, so that's the fine
Dilu: 嗯,但是我们一般性都是被罚款,啊不是你去罚款被人
John: Yeah, you usually "get fined" you don't do the fining. So, you say things like 我被罚款了
Dilu: 对,除非你是一个警察
John: Yeah, unless you're a policeman
Dilu: 对
11:59
chris
December 24, 2011 at 07:56 AM
11:01
John: So, he starts off with 只有
Dilu: 嗯,只有几次
John: So, two 3rd tones meaning "only have". There have only been a couple of time
Dilu: 是的,因为停车被罚款了
John: So, because of parking he was fined. So, this little phrase is really useful, to be fined.
Dilu: 啊,被罚款了,被罚款了
John: Right, so it's frequently with this 被,meaning it's in the passive and then you have this 了 because it already happened
11:31

December 24, 2011 at 07:51 AM
10:32
Dilu: 嗯,那司机的回答是没出过事故
John: OK, so he uses a verb with 事故, right?
Dilu: 嗯,出,第一声,出事故
John: So, 出,that's like to have an accident
Dilu: 对
John: An accident occurs, right?
Dilu: 是,啊,那我们有的时候要会说发生事故
John: OK, so he hasn't had any accidents, and then...
Dilu: 只有几次因为停车被罚款了
11:01

December 24, 2011 at 07:45 AM
10:02
John: So, 记录, two 4th tones, that means a record.
Dilu: 对,就是你有没有不好的记录
John: OK, so do you have an accident or violation record. Do you have these on your record
Dilu: 是的
John: OK, notice in Chinese they use the word "and" where in English we use the word "or"
Dilu: 哦,对,在中文里面我们用和但是其实它的意思是"or" in English
John: OK, well don't worry about that too much, it's not too confusing in context normally
10:32

December 24, 2011 at 01:09 PM
09:33
John: OK, so we have two important words that are together here, the first one is...
Dilu: 事故,事故,两个第四声
John: OK, two 4th tones, 事故 refers to an accident, like a traffic accident
Dilu: 嗯,没错还有一个是违章,违章
John: 违章,so that's 2nd tone, 1st tone
Dilu: 是的
John: It means a violation, right?
Dilu: 嗯,那这里讲的是事故和违章的记录,记录
10:02
chris
December 24, 2011 at 01:03 PM
09:05
John: Yeah, so you see this pattern a lot when you're talking about "not a single one", "not a single time". Can we have another simple example of this?
Dilu: 嗯,美国我一次也没去过
John: OK, so I haven't been to the States even once
Dilu: 对,haven't been there even once
John: OK, and then there's another important question, right?
Dilu: 嗯,有没有事故和违章记录,有没有事故和违章记录
09:33
chris
December 24, 2011 at 01:00 PM
08:33
John: So, normally how many points do you use a year. So, how much trouble do you get in.
Dilu: 嗯,那这个司机好像非常好,他说近五年一分也没扣过
John: So, 近五年
Dilu: 啊,这句的就是最近的五年
John: OK, the past five years
Dilu: 没错
John: What happened?
Dilu: 一分也没扣过
John: So, even one point I haven't gotten deducted
Dilu: 对,一分也没扣过这个也没就是强调没有
09:05
chris
December 24, 2011 at 12:55 PM
08:04
John: Right, so in China every year you start out with 12 points
Dilu: 嗯,对
John: And if you lose them all then you're in trouble, right?
Dilu: 对
John: Whereas, ah, in the States you start out with none and then you get them and they build up and if you get too many you have problems
Dilu: 就是我们是扣分你们是加分,对吗
John: Yeah, yeah we get our points and you guys lose your points. So 扣分 means to deduct points
Dilu: 嗯,对,那她的问题是开一年车会扣几分
08:33
chris
December 24, 2011 at 12:44 PM
07:29
John: So, can we just say 开车一年
Dilu: 啊,听上去有些不自然我们会说开一年车
John: OK, so you put the 一年 in the middle
Dilu: 对
John: So, 开一年车,so driving for a year
Dilu: 嗯,开一年车会扣几分,会扣几分
John: So, 扣,4th tone, that means to deduct, right?
Dilu: 嗯,是的
John: To subtract, to dock
Dilu: 那这个好像在中国和国外也不太一样那在中国呢每一个司机是一年有十二分
08:04
chris
December 24, 2011 at 12:38 PM
07:00
Dilu: 一般,一般
John: Alright, so there's a tone change there becomes 4th and 1st. So, 一般 means typically, normally, in general...
Dilu: 嗯,就是这样这个情况通常来说
John: OK, so in general, and then the question is...
Dilu: 开一年车会扣几分
John: So, 开一年车
Dilu: 嗯,那这边呢其实是开车和一年
07:29
chris
December 24, 2011 at 12:29 PM
06:29
John: So he drove for the 领导
Dilu: 嗯,领导好象是一个中国的一个单词
John: So, 领导,two 3rd tones, it's the, the leader, the boss
Dilu: 嗯,没错
John: The head-honcho in the company, like VP or something, CEO?
Dilu: 啊那些都是领导
John: OK
Dilu: 嗯,在一个国企给领导开车
John: OK, then the questioning continues
Dilu: 一般开一年车会扣几分
John: OK, so the first word is...
07:00
chris
December 24, 2011 at 12:23 PM
06:05
John: 国企是什么?
Dilu: 国企就是国有企业state owned enterprise
John: Ah, OK. So, 国企 is the short-form
Dilu: 嗯
John: So, 2nd tone, 3rd tone, right?
Dilu: 没错,第二声和第三声
John: So, at a state owned enterprise do what?
Dilu: 啊,给领导开车,给领导开车
06:29
chris
December 24, 2011 at 12:20 PM
05:32
John: So, here we see the 是。。。的 pattern, right?
Dilu: 嗯,那这句话完整的是以前你是做什么的
John: Or 做什么工作的,right?
Dilu: 没错,没错
John: OK, so just like you can ask someone that you meet for the first time 你是做什么的,meaning what do you do.
Dilu: 对,或者简单一点以前是做什么的
John: Yeah, what did you used to do. Alright...
Dilu: 那这个司机以前在一个国企给领导开车,在一个国企给领导开车

Yeah, Ken and his 'lexical chunks'! Brings back heaps of memories, when I first listened to CPod ( like over 4 years ago now) I'd never thought I would be able to 'transcribe' a lesson word-for-word. I also remember thinking Ken had really good Chinese for a 外国人, but now I'm not so sure...it sounds a little 'mono-tonal', but much better than anything I'm capable of I must admit...
chris
December 24, 2011 at 08:31 AM
I had a quick listen to that traditional medicine lesson - talk about old school chinesepod. Good old Ken! He certainly enjoyed the talking ;-) Very different compared to the current Intermediate styles.

December 24, 2011 at 08:27 AM
No worries, continue on - I'll go back to the traditional medicine...

December 24, 2011 at 07:30 AM
John: So this is that C1 in the dialogue
Dilu: 哎,没错。C 就是小型的汽车
John: C1 是吗?
Dilu: 啊,C1 表示的是手动挡的小车
John: So manual transmission
Dilu: 对对对,就是中国啊,可能在国外是不一样呢
John: OK, so C1 this is one of the most common ones to have
Dilu: 没错
John: 好,so then the interview questioning continues, right?
Dilu: 嗯。以前是做什么的?以前是做什么的?
05:32
chris
December 24, 2011 at 02:37 AM
04:30
Dilu: 嗯,是的什么种类
John: OK, 类型 that's 4th, 2nd, right?
Dilu: 对,第四声和第二声
John: So, in China there's lots of categories of drivers' licences from, like, little scooters and stuff to, to big huge trucks, right?
Dilu: 对,对,对,嗯其实驾照一共是有十五个类型
John: 十五个
Dilu: 嗯,【这十五个中各样】的车,但是,啊,大多数的人去考驾照都是考C照
05:01
chris
December 24, 2011 at 02:28 AM
04:00
Dilu: 对,两个第四声也是一个非常有用的单词,驾照
John: So this is that same 驾 as in 驾龄
Dilu: 对,驾龄的驾,照就是护照的照
John: OK and this refers to a driver's licence, right?
Dilu: 没错
John: So, driver's licence again is...
Dilu: 驾照,驾照
John: OK, very important word. So, the question again was...
Dilu: 驾照是什么类型
John: So, 类型 meaning, like, category/type?
04:30
chris
December 24, 2011 at 02:08 AM
03:31
Dilu: 嗯
John: Are there any other examples that are common
Dilu: 老同学,老同学就是认识时间很长的同学
John: So, old classmates. How about old friends?
Dilu: 老朋友,也很好
John: OK. Alright, so this guy's a 老司机
Dilu: 嗯,然后的问题就是驾照是什么类型,驾照是什么类型
John: OK, so 驾照 this is J..I..A, 4th tone, Z..H..A..O, 4th tone, right?
04:00
chris
December 24, 2011 at 02:03 AM
03:02
John: OK, 老司机,so that's 老 in a good way, right?
Dilu: 嗯,对,对,对,说的不是年龄而是驾龄
John: So, he's experienced
Dilu: 对
John: But this 老, you can't just attach it to any job
Dilu: 啊,这种使用不可以放在所有的职业前面
John: Like for example if I said 老医生
Dilu: 啊,那就是听上去这个医生年纪很大
John: So it's an old doctor
Dilu: 对
John: So, you can't put that at the beginning of every occupation
03:31
chris
December 24, 2011 at 01:56 AM
02:30
Dilu: 对
John: So the amount of time you've been driving
Dilu: 没错
John: Your years of driving
Dilu: 嗯,驾龄挺长的
John: So, if you have many years of driving experience you say 驾龄挺长的
Dilu: 对,你要说驾龄长不可以说驾龄大
John: 驾龄多,怎么样?
Dilu: 也不可以一定要说长和短
John: OK, got it
Dilu: 那一个驾龄挺长的司机我们叫他老司机,老司机
03:02
chris
December 24, 2011 at 01:53 AM
02:01
John: So, 15 or 16 years
Dilu: 嗯,那这位司机的驾龄挺长的,驾龄挺长的
John: OK, so something is long. Something is pretty long, 驾龄
Dilu: 啊,嗯,我们看一下这个词,驾龄,第四声和第二声
John: OK, 4th and 2nd and what does it mean?
Dilu: 啊,表示的就是驾驶的时间,驾驶的【年历】
John: So, the 驾驶 refers to driving
