Thanks Baba. This one caught me out several times in this lesson. I had a feeling it was some type of complement to the "ting" but couldn't quite get it (was expecting qilai, qingchu, or similar!). BTW totally unrelated, you're an Aussie, right? I'm on business trip to Sydney at the moment and just wanted to compliment the city. Really nice from what I've seen and the festival of light that is currently on is making the opera house and various other buildings great to look at!

John: OK, 行李 that's luggage, remember.
Dilu: 嗯,还有一个词也很像就是心理,心理
John: Ah, OK, so 'in your heart'. That's just X I N, though, it's not X I N G
Dilu: 啊,对的,对的,但是听【相去】很像
John: Yeah, also, uh, psychology, right?
Dilu: 啊,对。In your heart和psychology听【相去】是一样的都是心理
John: OK, or psychology we could say 心理学,right?
Dilu: 啊,对对对
John: Alright, but anyway we're off the topic, if you guys have any questions about buying stuff at duty free shops

Dilu: OK, go ahead
John: OK, I want to ask two questions, so it is....please tell me in Chinese what's your surname, what is your last name?
Dilu: 啊,我姓李
John: Alright, and what is the word for luggage
Dilu: 行李
John: Alright
Dilu: 嗯.....Oh, I got you!
John: So, what are the tone breakdowns here? Can you tell us?
Dilu: 啊,姓李,第四声和第三声
John: OK, and the other one?
Dilu: 行李,第二声和轻声

Dilu: 嗯,第二句是这个男生说的还有什么东西在免税店买比较划算
John: OK, so again, at the duty free shop
Dilu: 嗯
John: Buy
Dilu: 对,啊第三句是这个女孩子说的很多人都在机场买中华香烟
John: So, at the airport buy Chunghwa cigarettes
Dilu: 啊,是的,是的
John: OK, got it
Dilu: 嗯。And there's one more thing I want to talk about
John: This is something I want to talk about
Dilu: OK, go ahead
John: It's tones, right? Our favourite topic

John: OK, so we mention before that if you're used to thinking in English, then you're going to want to say 'buy something at a certain place'
Dilu: 嗯
John: But in Chinese the place comes first
Dilu: 对
John: So, there are some examples of this in the dialogue we just heard. What are they?
Dilu: 第一句呢是这个女孩子说的,他说:有些化妆品可以在机场的免税店买
John: OK, so buy them at the airport duty free shop

John: And a cigarette?
Dilu: 一根香烟
John: OK, so we're going to listen to the dialogue again, but before we do though, I want you to pay attention to the way we put the place before the verb and specifically we're talking about where you buy things.
Dilu: 嗯。And there's three sentences in this dialogue actually
John: Alright, so listen up for that. We're going to talk about it a little more after we listen to the dialogue again.

Dilu: 这个一条呢里面有十包香烟
John: OK, so within 一条 are 十包, so within 一条 are 十包
Dilu: 对啊
John: 10 packs, so that refers to a carton of cigarettes
Dilu: 嗯,是的是的
John: So 一条 is a carton
Dilu: 对
John: What is one cigarette then?
Dilu: 我们叫一根,一根
John: Ah, OK. Different measure word
Dilu: Yeah, 对的
John: Alright, well let's hear that one more time, so a carton is?
Dilu: 一条香烟
John: And a packet of cigarettes?
Dilu: 一包香烟

Tried lots of combos for that square-bracket but none of them fit the sentence.

John: OK, so then he says.....
Dilu: 行,我也给老爸买一条,给老爸买一条
John: So, 'old dad'
Dilu: 呵呵,老爸那就是爸爸的nickname
John: OK, it's kind of like 'my old man'
Dilu: 啊,对。就是听【准许】两个人的关系比较亲密
John: OK, it sounds like they're very close
Dilu: 嗯
John: So, he's going to give his old man, buy what?
Dilu: 买一条,买一条
John: 一条, so is that like one cigarette?
Dilu: 不是不是,怎么可能?

I first thought of 指...as in "indicating", but I think the 中华 does refer to China as part of the brand name, and so I think 只 makes more sense.
chris
May 30, 2011 at 05:02 AM
08:59
Dilu: 这个中华香烟不是【只】中国香烟啊它是一个香烟的品牌
John: OK, so this is a brand of cigarettes
Dilu: 嗯
John: It's called 中华
Dilu: 啊没错
John: In English, it looks like chunghwa, right?
Dilu: 那what is that?
John: It's spelt C H U N G H W A, it's this like...
Dilu: Ah, I didn't know that
John: this non-pinyin way of writing the name
Dilu: 啊
John: Chunghwa cigarettes
Dilu: 啊,很多人在机场买中华香烟
John: right, this....because this is the most famous brand of Chinese cigarettes, right?
Dilu: 啊,是的

08:29
Dilu: So, the suggestion from the girl is: 香烟,买香烟吧
John: Cigarettes, the family-friendly present, right?
Dilu: 对,在中国肯定是
John: Alright, so the word for cigarettes is?
Dilu: 香烟,香烟
John: So, literally 'fragrant smoke'. That's two 1st tones, right?
Dilu: 啊,是的,两个第一声
John: OK, so 'fragrant smoke' is of course cigarettes
Dilu: 嗯
John: And, she also recommends a brand, right?
Dilu: 对,是中华香烟,中华香烟

John: Alright, so he's looking for other things in the duty free shop that are rather what?
Dilu: 比较划算
John: 划算, 2nd tone, 4th tone, what does that mean?
Dilu: 划算就是,啊,这个东西很好价格也不贵
John: OK, so it's reasonably priced, right?
Dilu: 嗯
John: It's a good deal
Dilu: 对
John: So, he's asking this because.....
Dilu: 啊,因为他想给家人带点儿礼物
John: OK, so bring some presents back for his family
Dilu: 嗯,是的

May 28, 2011 at 06:04 AM
07:28
Dilu: 这样就不会超重了,就不会超重了
John: OK, so 就, 4th tone, this is emphasising the result
Dilu: 对,强调它的结果
John: Alright, so if you do it this way then it will not go over-weight
Dilu: 对,如果在免税店买就不会超重了
John: OK, and this 了 is indicating a change of state
Dilu: 嗯
John: If you do it this way then it's different
Dilu: 是的是的
John: OK, got it. So anyway apparently this guy doesn't have experience of duty free shops, what does he say?
Dilu: 他说:还有什么东西在免税店买比较划算

Completely stumped with the two sets of square-brackets above, even at 50% play-speed. Any help appreciated.

May 28, 2011 at 05:56 AM
06:59
Dilu: 嗯,那我们来看一下这个句子的结构:在机场的免税店买
John: OK, so where you buy it and then the verb 买
Dilu: 是的是的
John: You can't put it after, is that right?
Dilu: 嗯,这个跟英文很不一样
John: So, if you ever find yourself saying 买在 blah blah blah, you're probably making a bad sentence in Chinese
Dilu: 嗯,啊没关系我们【代化】还有两个句子可以在【短临】一下
John: OK, so you're going to hear more of this pattern but anyway, what is the point of buying at the duty free shop?

May 28, 2011 at 05:49 AM
06:31
John: OK, hold-on, so at the very beginning of this sentence we have....
Dilu: 有些,有些
John: What does that mean?
Dilu: 有些就是有一些
John: 有一些 so there are some
Dilu: 嗯,对
John: There are some what?
Dilu: 化妆品,化妆品
John: OK, so some of the make-up
Dilu: 嗯,就是cosmetics
John: OK, some of the make-up what?
Dilu: 可以在机场的免税店买
John: OK, so some of the make-up you can buy at the duty free shop in the airport

John: Alright. It doesn't mean 'super heavy', right?
Dilu: 不是不是
John: It means 'to go overweight'
Dilu: 呵呵super-heavy.....good one!
John: OK. And notice here we have this 会 and then followed by 的 which indicates certainty
Dilu: 嗯
John: He's sure if he buys all these things and sticks it in his luggage, he's going to go overweight
Dilu: 没错,我的行李会超重的
John: OK, but the girl has a solution for this too, right?
Dilu: 啊,对啊,她说:有些化妆品可以在机场的免税店买

Dilu: Wow, you were really greedy
John: Hey, I was a kid. So, what's the guy's reaction to the long list?
Dilu: 他说:我的行李会超重的,我的行李会超重的
John: Alright, so he's talking about his luggage, right? What's the word for that?
Dilu: 行李,行李,是第二声和第轻声
John: OK, 2nd tone, neutral
Dilu: 嗯
John: So, my luggage will....
Dilu: 超重,会超重的
John: Alright, so 超重 this is actually a verb, right?
Dilu: 是的,是的
John: 1st tone, 4th tone
Dilu: 对
John: It means 'to go overweight'

Dilu: 嗯,我都写在上面了,我都写在上面了
John: Alright, so notice this 都 comes before the verb
Dilu: 嗯
John: And it means 'all', there's no word for 'everything', right?
Dilu: 啊是的,在动词的前面要是全部我把这些东西全部都写在上面了
John: OK, I wrote it all down on the list
Dilu: 嗯,so the reaction of the guy is 哇这么多
John: Yeah, it sounds like a list I used to make when I was little and I wanted Santa to bring me presents. It was, like, 10 pages long.

Dilu: 嗯
John: But anyway she has prepared for this little shopping trip, apparently she knew exactly where he was going
Dilu: 嗯
John: So what does she give him
Dilu: 是一个清单,清单
John: That's two 1st tones and it means a list, right?
Dilu: 对,a list of all those things she wants
John: OK. Now, in Chinese there are various different ways to talk about lists, but if it's a shopping list it's probably going to be....
Dilu: 清单,清单
John: OK, and then she said I wrote everything on here, on this list, right?

Dilu: 对,两个第四声
John: OK, so then he asks what she wants him to buy, right?
Dilu: 你要代购什么? 你要代购什么?
John: Alright, now wait a minute. He's buying stuff for her, right?
Dilu: 是啊
John: So why does he say 你要代购什么? Actually, he's the one doing the buying
Dilu: 噢,这句话就是你要我代购什么
John: OK, or 你要我帮你代购什么?
Dilu: 啊,对对对,是一样的意思
John: OK, anyway we're clear on who's doing the buying

May 26, 2011 at 03:04 PM
03:31
Dilu: 啊,对。这个女孩子说那你能不能帮我代购一些东西,帮我代购一些东西
John: OK, so this 帮我 means 'do it for me' not 'help me', right?
Dilu: 嗯,没错
John: So, 代购 for me
Dilu: 呵呵,对。代购就是【带起我去】买这个东西
John: OK, so buy something for me
Dilu: 嗯,是的
John: Could she have just said 帮我买?
Dilu: 可以啊
John: And that 代购 is two 4th tones, right?

03:01
John: OK, so it's not really the company, it's the office
Dilu: 嗯,对。然后这句话的结构【根底】句话是一样的,你可以说我要培训两周但是我要把这个地点放在培训的前面
John: OK, so if you're saying where you're going for two weeks of training you have to put that before the verb
Dilu: 嗯
John: Alright, and that is a theme of today's lesson. We're going to get into that a bit later, but....so go to the place and then do what. OK, so anyway this, uh, going to the States, to the head office, this prompts a request for a favour, right?

May 26, 2011 at 02:38 PM

John: OK, and what is his business?
Dilu: 他要去总公司培训两周,去总公司培训两周
John: OK, so he's going to do two weeks of training, right?
Dilu: 对,培训两周
John: 培训, that's 2nd tone, 4th tone, right?
Dilu: 是的
John: And where's he going to go to do that?
Dilu: 噢,去总公司,去总公司
John: So, 总公司 is that like a head company?
Dilu: 是的,但是在英文里面我们都是常常说head office对吧

John: OK, so we're saying 'go to the United States to go on a business trip', is that right?
Dilu: 啊,对的
John: OK and you don't say 出差去美国, is that right?
Dilu: 嗯,不可以怎么说,你可以说听说你要出差,但是如果要有【第一点】的话要把他放在出差的前面
John: OK, so if you want to add the place where you're going on business put 去 and that place and 出差 otherwise just leave out the place
Dilu: 嗯,没错没错

John: Alright, so the first word we hear in this dialogue is the guy’s name, right?
Dilu: 嗯,他叫林伟,林伟
John: 2nd tone, 3rd tone
Dilu: 嗯
John: Alright, not super important but, uh, what’s this news the girl heard about the guy?
Dilu: 这个女孩子听说他要去美国出差
John: OK, so ‘go to the States on business’
Dilu: 嗯, 听说你要去美国出差
John: OK, now correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t 出差, two 1st tones, isn’t that ‘to go on a business trip’
Dilu: 没错,就是为了工作的事情去其他的地方

John: Hey guys, I'm John and in this lesson we're talking about shopping, but not just any shopping.
Dilu: 嗯,我们今天要在免税店买东西
John: OK, so that was 'duty free shop', right?
Dilu: 嗯,没错,免税店
John: 免税, that’s 3rd tone, 4th tone, that’s ‘tax-free’, right?
Dilu: 嗯,so for stores it is 店
John: OK, so anyway, in this dialogue we’re about to witness a very Chinese cultural phenomenon, I think.
