Although there are some verbs which can stand on their own with one syllable, in modern Chinese, many verbs are expressed in two (or more) syllables. In fact, most monosyllabic verbs can be changed into disyllabic verbs. This Qing Wen discusses some of the ways that Chinese verbs grow longer.

zài Zhōngwén lǐmiàn jiào “dān yīnjié ”hé “shuāng yīnjié ”。
In Chinese, they are called “dānyīnjié” and “shuāngyīnjié”.
在中文很简单,因为“单音节”就是一个字,“双音节就是两个字。
zài Zhōngwén hěn jiǎndān ,yīnwèi “dān yīnjié ”jiùshì yī gè zì ,“shuāng yīnjié jiùshì liǎng gè zì 。
In Chinese it's very easy, because monosyllabic words have just one character, and disyllabic words have two characters.
但是现代汉语一般要用双音节的词。
dànshì xiàndàihànyǔ yībān yào yòng shuāng yīnjié de cí 。
But modern Chinese usually will use disyllabic words.
