Shanghai in 1940 was a tough place. The Japanese had invaded and both a world war and a bitter civil war loomed. However, in the midst of all of this darkness, great joy came in the form of 《玫瑰玫瑰我爱你》 (Méigui Méigui Wǒ Ài Nǐ, "Rose, Rose, I Love You"), a classic Chinese love song about love and beauty in the most unlikely of places.
