But recently a study has revealed that thin is not necessarily healthy especially for the elderly. In our pursuit of being thin, we use the idiom 适可而止 which means to know when to stop and not go overboard.

每天摄入的食物是人体所需营养的主要来源,膳食营养是保证老年人健康的基石。武警广东省总队医院营养科主任曾晶指出老年人要注意身体的营养是否均衡,不要过于相信“千金难买老来瘦”的说法,有科学的膳食安排、合理的体力活动以保持健康体重,能减少和延缓疾病的发生发展、提高老年人的生活质量。

The daily intake of food is the main source of nutrition for the human body. Dietary nutrition is the cornerstone for ensuring the health of the elderly. Zeng Jing, director of the Nutrition Department of the Armed Police Guangdong Provincial Corps Hospital, pointed out that the elderly should pay attention to whether the body's nutrition is balanced. Don't go overboard with the belief that thin is healthy for the elderly. Use scientific dietary planning and suitable physical activities to maintain a healthy weight. They can reduce and delay the occurrence and development of diseases and improve the quality of life of the elderly.
曾晶介绍,对于老年人,体重过轻或消瘦会增加骨质疏松、食道和胃肿瘤等疾病的风险,同时导致对疾病的抵抗耐受力降低、缩短寿命。目前普遍认为,老年人的健康体质指数在20~27之间为宜,也就是说,微胖的老人相对更健康。

Zeng Jing said that for the elderly, underweight or weight loss will increase the risk of osteoporosis, esophagus and stomach cancer, and at the same time lead to reduced resistance to disease and shorten life. Zeng Jing explains reduction of taste and chewing function, gastrointestinal motility slowed down, and decreased digestive juice secretion, which all affected the appetite and digestion and absorption capacity of the elderly; empty nest state, elderly people living alone may be more simple and casual. These will lead to an imbalance in the nutritional intake of the elderly and ultimately affect their health.
