Oh, housing prices in Shanghai are getting higher all the time. How can common folks like us go on living? Sometimes, I think that even if I worked like a dog for thirty years, I might not be able to afford a house. I get really down in the dumps.

I hear there are some nouveaux riches who were doing large-scale real estate speculation recently. They're making Shanghai's housing prices really high. Is that true?
好像有过这种说法。真不知道那些暴发户有些什么秘诀，能一夜间暴富，很多人并没有很高的学问，说难听点还很土气不上台面，可是有钱却是不争的事实。
hǎoxiàng yǒu guo zhèzhǒng shuōfa 。zhēn bù zhīdào nàxiē bàofāhù yǒuxiē shénme mìjué ，néng yīyèjiān bàofù ，hěn duō rén bìng méiyǒu hěn gāo de xuéwèn ，shuō nántīng diǎn hái hěn rustic bù shàng táimiàn ，kěshì yǒuqián què shì bùzhēng de shìshí 。
It seems like people have said that. I don't know what kind of secret tricks those newly rich have. They can get rich overnight. A lot of them aren't very well-educated. Not to put too fine a point on it, they're so vulgar that they wouldn't normally be able to make it. But it's an uncontested fact that they have money.
哎，这些暴发户怎么这么霸道呢，有钱也没什么了不起呀。我印象中的暴发户，就是除了有钱，什么也没有的那种。他们大建豪宅，大肆挥霍，却没有什么精神实质和生活格调，即便有钱，也被称作“不入流”的一族。

Ah, how can these nouveaux riches be so high-handed? There's nothing great about having money. It seems to me that these New Money guys are the kind who have nothing but their cash. They build McMansions, and throw their money around, but they don't have much in the way of spirit or lifestyle. Even though they have money, they're still called ''arrivistes."
