Posted on: Tone Change Rule: Yi '一'

Although it is not that it is a big deal, I have always found it odd that transcripts do not reflect the tone changes for (yī) and (bù).

I have several text books from the Beijing Language and Culture University Press as well as my kid’s textbooks from People's Education Press which all have pinyin that reflects these tone changes.  So the rule does not seem to be universal.

It also makes more sense on a practical level to reflect the changes. It seems that pinyin should represent the sound of Chinese more so than the written language – and it can do so more accurately with the changes.

Thanks Chinesepod - the PDF is a huge improvement to Qing Wen.

I noticed that the PDF file is using complicated characters instead of simplified ones - is that something I changed on my preferences or something new?

Nice video - I am still a little confused about escalator versus elevator.  Is there a way to say: “Would you like to take the escalator or the elevator?”

It seems like there should be some way to distinguish the two.

The Chinese that I met with in China were so polite that after one meeting they not only walked me out the door, but continued to walk me to the bus stop and actually got on the bus with me to tell the 售票员 (shòupiàoyuán) which stop I needed to go to. I was a little embarrassing but appreciated.
