Really interesting topic. I wonder whether you can could us what are the top 5 most popular Beijing Operas, to give us some idea of which opera to start listening to. Also whether there are any contemporary composers creating new Beijing Operas. If so who are they and what are the Operas called?

How does using "jian" fit into seeing somebody? For instance can I say

I can see that using a 4th Tone makes sense to express anger , but my dictionary gives a first tone, and I just wonder whether there are everyday situation when you would use 哼with a first tone?

Tingyun,First can I say thanks for taking so much trouble .What you have to say is really interesting to me and I am fascinated by it. I cant seem to download the PDF but I have been trying to read the HTML version. It is really complicated for me to read and understand , so it will take me some time!
“trying to search for a 'need' for their use is making the mistake of treating English as a universal standard”. My intention was more to try and understand why Modal Particles play such a big part in everyday speech and writings. If you watch any Chinese ad or TV show it is full of Modal Particles, and yet they are often not explained thoroughly in text books ,and at the same time disparaged by most learners as being somehow “a waste of time” This just seems a contradiction to me, so the phonetic explanation seemed to me the most logical way to put them in context. It is true that you can hear a difference sometimes in spoken dialogue when they don’t use Modal Particles. So may be their purpose is mainly to do with written Chinese?
