Yes you need a passport

As of June 1st, 2011, new regulations are in force. Foreigners must show their passport to purchase tickets for the fast trains. Chinese citizens show their ID cards. (from Wikitravel)

This mean you can't by it from the vending machine any longer. But they started to sell tickets on line in January. Don't know if westeners can by on line.

As a first and last resort when traveling. Get the train number and departure time. Then you will be ok if everything else fails.

brian85. China is as big as US and Mexico together. With many different dialects, some of them as far from each other as English and Spanish. Many Chinese can speak one or two, a little or fluent. A third language outside China is not needed in this huge culture, as wast an interesting as the western world. Leiferik.

danjo, Many supermarkets have condoms, at the register along with the sweets. Different brand and size. Easy to see, if you look. You surly find it at Wal-Mart or Ren Ren le. I'm more interested in, the proper term of the genitals. My wife say; older brother and younger sister. It is not the terms I would use in a hospital. An intermediate show, set in a hospital is preferred. Woman problem is a big percent of hospital visits. Leiferik.

Interesting. And a great lesson. Agree with Dave on all accounts. When in China I am close to HongKong. There is not so big a problem. It is funny thou, that the Chinese Entrepreneurs have not yet invented Mr Big? Must be a good deal, with all money stin westeners around now a day. Shame on Shanghai "Eastern Paris" ...Leiferik...
