Posted on: To Tip or Not to Tip

In familiar restaurants in China where I frequent, where we hold business dinners in private rooms, I will typically tip the tea girl or waitress directly during the meal by pressing 10 or 20 RMB into their hand depending on the number of people in the room. Sometimes it is politely refused or they have a look on their face like “what are you doing?” A simple mei wenti” 没问题usually works. I don’t believe that when one tips in China by adding onto the credit card bill it goes to the servers but to the owner of the establishment. Therefore I never add the tip onto a credit card but prefer to provide directly to the person who is providing the service. At some of these restaurants, I usually have the Captain’s phone number and will call ahead to make a reservation. And preferential treatment is usually rewarded by 50 RMB.

At small unfamiliar establishments I may or may not indicate to “keep the change”  不用找。

Hi Amber,

Loved to listen to your show whether it was in the gym, in the car or on plane to China. You will be missed.

But PLEASE do not become a Yankees fan !!!

Lordstanley - I do like the Red Wings, have for awhile as my Boston B's don't really go anywhere ........ but you may want to teach your daughter how to say Boston in Chinese (I think its Bushudun?) as in Red Sox and Celtics :-) Clay - my man, what happened to that initial vote of confidence for your NYG's ??? 12 points is a lot on the latest lines .....

CLAY - I was wondering when a Giants fan would pop up !! Ler's wager a dinner on the game. (no I'm not giving you points). I do come to China frequently (8x in '07) one of us should be able to collect on the wager. What do you say? I do saty mostly in the Southern part of China but I will need to hit Shanghai in '08. Also in Feb '05 I was in a bar in Shekou watching the game between the Patriots and the Eagles (Pats won) and got interviewed by the Shenzhen News (link attached). Drinking pints at 7:30 in the morning was a first for me. http://paper.sznews.com/szdaily/20050208/ca1428159.htm Norman GO PATS

My opinion is that its a longshot. Does the family have "connections?" In any event she will have to go through an interview process to obtain the visa. Maybe something she says in the interview process will be enough ?? You'll never know unless she takes that first step. Have her talk with some of her friends that have visited the US and find out how they managed to obtain a visa. I hope it works out for you.
