I'm wondering whether there's a business opportunity here selling 'life prolonging' razors to my hairy legged brethren in Yang Cheng. Or alternatively, selling spray on hair to the 假的 jiǎde crab sellers.

As a astrology sceptic I was happy to have gone through my entire life not knowing (or caring) what star sign I was born under (believe me it isn't easy to 'not know' this). That was until about three months ago when a discussion about forthcoming birthdays prompted a misguided and deluded workmate to blurt out that I was an aquarian and consequently “a highly sociable person with good communication skills”. I was more than happy to play along by incorporating some strong industrial language in pointing out that they might consider using an alternative orifice to vent such non-information. But then maybe that was just my tactless aquarian personality trait coming through....

On the topic of level appropriateness I think it's important to have a spectrum of difficulty levels within the Newbie, Ele, Intermediate bands, firstly to expose learners to new challenges and secondly to allow them to work up through the stages without hitting the wall at the transition.
I certainly wouldn't be obsessed with the perceived off-putting effect of this relatively hard lesson, anyone who is going to pack in their learning on the basis of one lesson is probably not that committed and might be expected to drop out irrespective of how hard the lessons are.
As a slight aside, it might be useful to solicit the opinions of other users on how they negotiate the transition between the stages. Or maybe this has already been discussed and I've missed the boat.

And of course we should not forget to wash our raw or live prawns down with plenty of 生啤 shēngpí raw (draft) beer! Never quite grasped the meaning of raw beer.....

Good luck with the future Pete. Your leaving will be a terribly sad loss for us. Your contribution to our learning has been enormous. Special thanks are due for opening up the world of Chinese poetry to heathens like myself! All the best!
