I realize you guys are on vacation, and will not see this right away, (新年快乐 by the way!) but really... how could you have almost an entire episode about the New Year's broadcast and not use the almost defacto semi official name... "Craptacular"!!???

That is really the coolest name ever, and you are depriving your listeners of a valuable piece of vocabulary! :-)

我完全同意!!!!

I like how the online versions of the dialog allow you to hide the pinyin and or English until ready to reveal it. But when working from downloaded or printed .pdf files, the PinYin is just unavoidable sitting there.

I definately want it nearby, because it helps greatly if you dont recognize a character, but my eye reads the Character/Pinyin/english 3-line layout all at once, and I feel stupid holding a sheet of paper over my screen.

CP, please consider changing the layout of the pdf's in this manner!

Thanks!

I was thinking about saying the same thing! I was specifically thinking about the bizzaro bluegrass music in the background in BST, but yeah... background music adds absolutely nothing to the experience, and it is actually quite a distraction!

Assuming you are using a Windows PC, (And have a higher version, not just the 'lite' version of XP, Vista or W7) Just go to Control Panel, Choose Regions and Languages... from there, go to the Keyboards and Languages tab, and select "Chnge Keyboards". From here, you can select additional languages and input methods. You should be able to add "Chinese, Simplified" (or traditional, etc.). When you have more than one additional language input method selected, you will then see the "Language Bar", which is a little window that lets you click it to select between the installed languages. It will be in the System tray on the task bar by default, but you can pull it off and let it float if you want. So now you have an additional input method. You will hear this referred to as an I.M.E. (input method editor). When "Chinese" is selected on your language bar, as you type PinYin, it will automatically start suggesting the possible Hanzi characters where you are entering text. The guesses are based on frequency, and also learns your usage over time, so it should be among the first choices presented. There are many settings (available from the language bar Options menu) that you may configure to make it work the way you want. It can be set up for characters only, words, or intelligent sentence parsing, etc. Generally, I use words mode, and when you see the characters you like, you press a number key corresponding to the list of suggestions.

If you have a MAC, there is a similar procedure, probably. On the iPhone, or IPod touch, you can also select multiple language IMEs and keyboards and switch between them. There are also several 3rd party IME add-ins... Google has a good one, as well as some Chinese made ones (but they scare me a little!)

Good luck!

Too funny! You are right, he spent 5 days straight correcting translations in some cases 5 years old! Thes translations are meant to be idiomatic, not always word-for-word. Wait, I have an idea... in a recent News and Features, I heard the translator job will be up for grabs when Jason moves to Taiwan! Perhaps Bertson could apply for the job!

One of the dictionaries in Pleco (ADS) has 很有 meaning "to be really..." And 中国特色 is a set phrase usually translated as "Chinese characteristics". I think overall, the feeling is "This is really a "chinese" kind of thing!".

Also, you have seen it used in 很有意思, that seems a similar construct.

很有意思! I was just googling trying to investigate your theory, and the closest I came was your 3/3/11 tweet!
