Lost in Asia: My "da gege" has no underworld connotations, however he has quite a few underwear ones!

Apart from being a means of communicatiuon the so called "Chinese hieroglyphics" are also an artform especially before the simplification of the characters. Chinese scholars have used them as such for centuries. Nowadays you can still see hundreds of banners with calligraphy in art shops and galleries all over China. When I was learning a litttle Chinese painting I loved using the 'mao bi'. It was like a kind of meditation.

Not as bad as the time when I walked into a Harbin restaurant and the only card playing Chinese patrons shouted: "Ta bi zi!"

Some other words I found relating to cats are: li2 = wild cat biao1 = tiger cat (da4)xiong2mao1 = (giant) panda, which literally translates as '(big) bear cat' Sorry my computer can't produce the characters. Our 2 cats are the most adorable animals!

There is no reference I can find to "due" in pinyin. I think it should be " dui"

Just to set the record straight, those Chinese curses were not posted by Ingmar but by somebody with a C.I.A. mentality who hacked the Ingmar window and forged the Ingmar I.D. Maybe to make me look bad. Not very intelligent though, for two reasons if you have read my previous postings. Firstly "wo zhi hui yi dian zhong wen" and as a beginner I am nowhere at the level of competency to be able to hurl insults at people in Chinese. Sometimes I wish I could. I had to use a dictionary to translate the words and then guess the meaning. Secondly my computer can only read Chinese characters, but I cannot type them, so my Chinese communications have to be in pinyin. You can draw your own conclusions! But let's now close Pandorra's box and get on with the serious study of Chinese language and culture.
