After climbing 5 sets of 16 steps to the fifth floor when staying with my friends, I asked them "lei bu lei?", between deep breaths. They took it that It was a little too much for me, so on subsequent outings they made me rest half way up before entering their apartment. Guess they were worrying a bit about my triple bypass op. the previous February, hehe. But I did appreciate their kindness and care.

To whom it may concern, Before and after are used for time. In front of and behind are used for place. away finishes with a 'y'. Sorry, as I can't be much help with Chinese, I thought I might as well do my bit for your English.

Glad to see .that the critics of improper English were effective to some extend. I must agree that the expession 'the Queen's English' sounds much better than that provocative and loaded term 'standard' English, however nobody ever complained about 'standard chinese' for putonghua. I suppose most of the non-chinese only know mandarin, hoho

I found 'mama huhu' to be a handy expression if I did not want to be very enthusiastic about something. I believe in English it means 'so so'.

I still stick by the term 'standard English' as being the language used by the non-American Anglo-Saxon world,like we have standard Chinese in the form of 'putonghua' and that does not include Cantonese. When the British had a Norman king it did not mean that the French ruled England I agree that language constantly develops and changes and words are borrowed from other languages and incorporated in one's own language. But when you use the same words and expressions as the standard framework of the language ,but giving them totally different meanings then it becomes confusing if not annoying to those who are not so eager to be trendy by adopting the lingo of 'big brother'.
