March 13, 2008 at 3:03 PMI am from Hong Kong and have been in the U.S. for more than 20 years. Back in those days the term AA制 was commonly used. It is from a phrase ⾃己顧⾃己, (meaning taking care of one self only), and the Cantonese pronunciation of 己 in the phrase sounds like the word "gay" in English. It thus evolved into "AA", not unlike the internet use of "gg" and "mm" for 哥哥 and 妹妹. Hope this helps.
