I've also seen 抱歉 (bào qiàn) and 道歉 (dào qiàn) for apologies - I may have the tonal markers on the wrong letter. I was told the nuance between the two is that 抱歉 is more about showing empathy and 道歉 is related to assuming blame or fault. Like, "I'm so sorry that happened" versus "I'm sorry - it's my fault".

Is that correct?
