November 29, 2010 at 1:32 AMQW is a great part of CP, but I agree that it needs to be more interactive. What about some exercises to help us put the principles of each QW into practice?

"Gets off..." takes on an entirely different meaning when it's followed by "on." It's almost always used in reference to a third party, and usually to describe someone who takes pleasure in the pain of others, e.g., "He gets off on seeing people humiliated." Like a lot of other slang, the etymology is sexual, but it's only occasionally used in that sense.

September 23, 2008 at 5:27 PMThe term "stock" means unmodified. Many years ago, a stock car was a supposedly unmodified American sedan used for oval racing. The "SC" in NASCAR stands for Stock Car, but today's NASCAR cars are nowhere near stock.
As to the great value of downforce, Aussie F1 driver Mark Webber is an expert. At Le Mans in 1999, he flew two Mercedes CLR's high into the air. The first car did a double somersault into the woods and landed on its feet. The second landed upside down on the track. Webber was shaken but unhurt.
Mark is still racing. He's a brave guy.

May 17, 2008 at 11:23 PMAwhile back, boba was huge in Monterey Park; there were shops that specialized in it. Its popularity seems to have sagged, though.

May 8, 2008 at 5:48 PMWaiters in China might suggest bizarre foods to foreigners, but when I lunch with my Chinese friends in Monterey Park, they're reluctant to order "strange" foods for the table. I've told them the only food I won't eat is sea cucumber, but they still avoid anything that I might consider weird. Too kind!

March 15, 2008 at 6:58 PMEven here in California, I've seen some amazing checkfights between my Chinese friends - people even going into the kitchen to intercept the check, or sprinting across the restaurant to grab it from the waiter. I've given up. I'll put up a token fight, but if paying makes people feel good, who am I to stand in the way?

November 22, 2012 at 3:58 PMWhile the unemployment rate in Taiwan has increased to over 4% in the last couple of years, there are relatively few homeless people. In a two-week visit, spent mostly in Taipei, we saw only one beggar.
